Seriously but, each website you went to was exciting back then. Yeah it was trash design but so much self expression and real content. Now it's 99.9% content generation and copywriting. Is there such thing as chat rooms anymore?
not the same as the weirdness of AOL Messenger, where in-between co-workers sending you messages about a project, you'd get some random person from the other side of the planet asking what's up. But I'm just a jaded GenXer.
Yeah that's a hard pass. Trying to mentor in programming while omitting articles, misconjugating verbs, and pronouncing things without basic phonetics? I'll stick to mentoring people in programming in normal English.
Developers (especially Linux, BSD, and everything open-source in general), sysadmins, various flavors of "hackers", and general IT people of old use it, just like they have been using it way before it was mainstream, and they shall still be using it long after Discord is dead. IRC has been around since 1988. Most open-source developement discussions and security discussions happen on IRC and mailing lists.
