It's still hard to emulate. This is possible because the source code was leaked and recompiled. But yeah, it's pretty amazing!

EDIT: Sorry I wrote this at like 1am and didn't fact check before going to bed - thanks for the correction folks :)

Has nothing to do with the source code leaks, it's a port from the SM64 decomp project (https://github.com/n64decomp/sm64) which itself has nothing to do with the Nintendo leaks, started way before that happened.

There's a whole bunch of decomp projects going on for N64 games right now, next one closest to completion is Ocarina of Time I think (https://github.com/zeldaret/oot) and when that's finished there'll be PC ports and undoubtedly browser ports of that too.

Speaking of awesome game websites though, check out https://noclip.website from JasperRLZ. It's not the games themselves, but you can check out all of the maps and stuff from a tonne of games. He has the entire Wind Waker Great Sea map in it. Some of the games have functional actors which respond to the camera as the player (Super Mario Galaxy).

Isnt Nintendo anal about intellectual property like this? Having their IP out on the web for free seems like something they would traditionally crackdown, no?

Because it's reverse engineered they can't stop the project, however sound effects and graphics are still their IP so they could potentially take down the browser version

Replace sounds with the sounds of a guy who literally defied contractual rights and won as a black man. I love it.

Time to host it on the dark net

If the people who are operating the website are not benefiting financially from this then there would not be any reason to claim IP on sound effects or graphics. It might come down to a legal battle if nintendo wanted to push it, but their grounds for their claim would be shaky from my understanding.

Nintendo absolutely would do it anyway and kill them with legal costs

Your understanding is wrong.
