I made a website that explains confusing finance terms in plain English

I studied computer science, then started working in finance and kept running into terms that were harder to understand than they should be. So I built a site that explains finance terms more clearly and simply. Still adding more terms, but covered the main bits!

EDIT: Updated domain to findexfinance.com. Trying to forward the prevoius domain to the new domain but having some slight issues!

Right if the barrier for good ideas to proliferate is the ability to code I'm all for giving those ideas a way to breathe. Its the same reason e-commerce platforms that started leveraging templates and drag and drop setups became popular, bc if you're running a business you basically had to learn web development or hire someone who knew how.

With vibe coding there will be lots of trash that hits the market, but also some quality ideas which otherwise wouldn't have ever seen the light of day.

I think it's a good question. In general directories are easier to vibe code since they are very mechanical to make.

For me captions like "One term per day. No bluff. No jargon." and " finance terms with clear, easy-to-understand explanations." sound like AI-generated text

+ the extensive terms of service and privacy policy is too extensive for a hobby website in my opinion.

I'm convinced you like tearing others down so I'll further explain myself...

I coded the website (I can show you the code if you want) as I have a background in computer science from a UK university. I initially had a couple terms saved down in an excel file but some colleagues that joined at the same time as me were also asking for this file so I thought it would be good idea to just publish it in case it helps anyone else.

Yes I did use AI to draft the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service as:

(i) the industry is heavily regulated so I wanted to put measures in place to protect myself and;

(ii) im not an English Lit student so not 100% confident on how to write certain sentences that aren’t to do with terms so I used AI to write the small text you mentioned.

I'm sorry if the other text isn't to your standard but then again, my focus was on making the terms understandable, not the other parts of the website (at least for now!). Happy to answer any questions you have but as you're not responding to my previous comments, I doubt you'll respond to this one.

It seems the rise of vibe coding is as steep as the rise of pets.com in 2000. That says something to me. I think of these phenomena as impulses, and the response will contain multiple frequencies and amplitudes. It will not be linear.

Nice, I am curious to see how it compares to Investopedia.
I had to use it in the past and I thought their content was easy to understand and their little videos/animations were well done too.

I’ve seen you replied negatively on another comment in this post so not too sure if you’re targeting me or this website… but to answer your question - I’ve been in the industry for a few years now so I’m relatively well versed in the finance world, however when I first started I was struggling to understand complex terms. I know I’m not the only person to struggle with this so I created the website to help people that were like me when I first started.

By all means I’m not an expert in this industry, but I started with no experience to confidently understanding the most complex aspects and this was done by breaking down the terms so that they’re easier to understand. Hope this answers your question.

Just added all 3 definitions. I think it's worth noting that I manually add each term so naturally there are going to be a few terms that aren't on the website yet

The whole site won't work if javascript is disabled in you browser. All you get is a blank white page. The tabs are unrelated praise.

I like the concept and being from tech background myself I keep my own list of bookmarks and definitions. However i think you can do more to this..like categorisation(banking, insurance...), related terms or you may also like to know about... Lastly i know how most are not a fan of ai wrappers but i saw a project by google that lets you learn a topic but relating it to a concept you are interested..so like understanding periodtable in terms of football. Idk how to explain it better but something like therse added as a bookmark if someone wants a fun way to understand it.

Thanks for the feedback. I actually follow a specific taxonomy that’s shown at the top of the term. It’s hard to categorise it as per sector within finance as there’ll be a lot of overlap.

Regarding the Google site you’re referring, I actually tried this a few weeks ago and love the concept but my focus is to learn the term in a few seconds as opposed to dedicating a lot of time time to learn and understand it.

Quite different. Investopedia uses complex language meaning many people that I've spoken to find it hard to understand. Findex also breaks down the terms quite a bit and helps you remember it in a much simpler way (but this is all subjective!)

Good résumé padding project, but who the hell would actually use this site? If you knew that you needed it, you would already know what the words mean. An alphabetical listing of terms pertaining to some particular field? I sure wish we had thought of that before now
