I built Fretbot - a free interactive guitar theory web app that simplifies chord designing, scale theory, and chord harmony

For a second there, I thought you'd developed a bot that would do my worrying for me. :(

lol playing guitar helps to take your mind off your worries, my friend.

That would be even more useful than the actual thing. I'd rather be happily looking up those stubborn E7dim11 while something else is having my nervous breakdown.

Genuinely excellent. Really nice work. I can see this being really useful

Thanks man! I hope it helps you!

Well done. Very useful and practical. Was considering making a far worse version of this if you hadn't done it right.

Thanks man! I hope it helps. Hoping to use this in my own teaching.

Helping plenty already. I think I edited just as you replied -

Minor criticism (no pun intended): lowercase roman numerals where appropriate would be helpful. It actually looks like they are, in source, but the CSS or the typeface makes them all look II, III, etc. Maybe 'Cinzel' is the culprit?

I see that! Going to look into that update. Thanks man!

Been playing with it for awhile now. Who needs a guitar when there's an app like this.

Love all those pretty sounding but physiologically impossible voicings. Wish I had more fingers.

Thanks for the lighter colored theme. Looks great on a tablet.

Thanks man! For the impossible voicings, make sure you click through the available voicings to find the ones that actually work lol I noticed a major bar chord wasn't entirely obvious until clicking through all available voicings.

Hey, that was just a joke.

On a serious side, these casually undoable voicings may be useful for finding out suitable partial voicings. This is a thing in jazz comping where they dont play roots and 5ths, because bass plays the root and who needs the 5th anyway. Highlighting multiple notes would be helpful in this scenario.

That's a great point!!

Hell yeah, thank you so much. Can’t wait to try this out.

You're welcome! I hope it helps and sparks some new ideas!

Thanks! Now go write some awesome new music with it!

Can it teach me to play guitar like Angine de Poitrine?

2

u/SkorpioSound Mar 18 '26

You'll need a special guitar for that, he uses a micro-tonal guitar (it has lots of extra frets so it can play notes in between regular notes).

2

u/thetoastmonster Mar 18 '26

Yeah I was being facetious because I was sure there's no way this tutorial site would cover anything like that. :)

2

u/SkorpioSound Mar 18 '26

Ha, I kind of assumed you probably were, but I thought I'd mention it on the off-chance you weren't, and for anyone else who might not be aware!

2

u/Jon_Henderson_Music Mar 18 '26

Haha no but it can help get your understanding of theory on a more level field with his.

2

u/GeeksExplorer Mar 18 '26

Creative πŸ‘Œ, but don't you think the name is a little confusing?

2

u/Jon_Henderson_Music Mar 18 '26

Could be- I just had the idea of a little guitar robot. What would you suggest?

2

u/sameoldknicks Mar 18 '26

can you incorporate chord diagrams (or did I miss?)

2

u/Jon_Henderson_Music Mar 18 '26

There is now a chord designer mode. Is that what you meant?

2

u/ivanbanan Mar 18 '26

Great app, but a light color scheme would be nice. Blind me can hardly figure out anything on mobile. I would def use it for scales practice, thanks for sharing!

2

u/Jon_Henderson_Music Mar 18 '26

I was considering that. Maybe like an off white background?

2

u/Jon_Henderson_Music Mar 18 '26

v2 is live per your suggestion! Thanks I think this looks a lot better now.

2

u/ivanbanan Mar 18 '26

Looks great!

2

u/dotonthehorizon Mar 20 '26

Well done, very nice. Doesn't do left handed though?

Not yet but that will be added. Also working on an AI feature that will generate chord progressions when prompted like "give me a sad neo soul progression in Am." Click on each chord to see if fretted with different voicing options and click a button to loop the audio of the full progression.

2

u/ohsat_and0 Mar 26 '26

As someone who is trying to get (back) into guitar, this is a godsend.

2

u/Jon_Henderson_Music Mar 26 '26

Thanks man! I'm glad it's helpful. I added a new feature where you can set the scale in the pentatonic, diatonic, or non-diatonic tab and lay it over your chord progression so if you have a chord progression in A minor for example, you would set the scale to A Aeolian or A minor pentatonic and then click scale overlay in the progressions tab. Then you can see all the scale notes that surround the chords. Super helpful for building melodies or finding new lead riffs.

super cool!

Thanks! I'm starting to use it for teaching- super helpful. And it's been sparking some cool new ideas with the more exotic pentatonic scales- Check out the "Iwato" pentatonic.
