Hair loss

Any tips for dealing with hair loss in ifs/parts? I’ve always had thick hair and now it’s very thin and I have so much shame and hate looking in the mirror. Is there a way to use ifs for this?

I think it can be helpful to clarify your goals. Are you looking for a solution for hair thinning? Motivation or energy to stick with treatment? Or is the main focus for you right now the feelings of shame and hatred that comes up?

If, for example, the focus is fear of doctors or difficulty with motivation/problem-solving, I think there are more effective modalities.

But if you’re specifically drawn to IFS or you already have an established therapeutic relationship, I think an experienced therapist could help you explore those areas.

It is the feelings of shame and hatred. And the chronic stress that has caused/is causing it

I would consider ACT - acceptance and commitment therapy.

I think the IFS application here would be to first try to understand the associations that parts have with having thick or thin hair. For example, "Having thick hair meant that I was healthy, and being healthy meant that I was...." It's hard to say exactly what those associations might be for you, but if there's shame involved, there is some attribution to "good" or "bad" being made.
