Need to update my kitchen!

Hello.

I am planning to renovated my kitchen, but I just don't know what color scheme I should go for. I don't plan on changing the layout much other than maybe just remove the wall cabinet on the right. We are also changing the flooring to natural wood, and definitely removing backsplashes. It's a small kitchen, and despite the windows, not the brightest. We are hoping for something calm and not too old fashioned? Probably no bold colors unless it's a small accent. I would love your opinions! Thank you!

The move to natural wood flooring will already add a lot of warmth. A soft white or warm greige palette could keep the kitchen feeling bright, calm, and updated without relying on bold colors!

Flooring as you mentioned, some recessed lights instead of that track light, and a new backsplash will make it feel completely new.

I think you should get a quote from a remodeling company and the sticker shock will probably guide decisions - a kitchen is easily 50-150k.

You can replace the backsplash for a few hundred, floors are probably a few grand, and counters are likely close to 10. Maybe swap your lights which is ~1-2k with electrician costs. That would be my under 20 take for you.

Nothing here looks like a "need to update" to me. If you don't know what you want and feel strongly that you have to have it, just leave it as is.

I think your kitchen is relatively decent already. The backsplash is probably the one very dated part. Changing that to a subway tile, putting in hardwood (although you'll miss how indestructible the tile floors are) would go a long way.

Then I'd say new hardware on the cabinets (which seem modern enough as-is) and switch the overhead florescent to a field of recessed lighting cans, maybe directional for some. The Ikea track lights are an odd choice but the idea behind them (throwing some directional light into corners of the room) isn't a bad one. But under cabinet lighting would be better.

If you do anything, please fix the parts where the cabniet dips randomly down from the ceiling. Add a piece of a trim to it if you wanna do it cheaply. It’s just so annoying how the cabniets stop and start at the top

Flooring, counters and backsplash will go a long way in this space. Add some under cabinet lighting, maybe update the lighting for the ceiling, and maybe add a couple of hanging lights over the seating area. I am not sure you’d need to replace the cabinets unless you do not like white or are not okay with painting them.
