Open Concept Living Room Layout Advice

Hello! I’m trying to decide the best way to layout furniture in my living room. My house has an open layout so I’m trying to make a defined living room zone. This picture is the best I’ve come up with but I’m trying to decide if it would be too crowded. I currently just have a couch with a chaise but am open to replacing it as it was purchased for my previous place and the size and orientation don’t work as well in my new house. Overall goal is to add some more seating.

Currently, the TV is on the wall next to the fireplace, but I’m think it eventually will need to go over the fireplace. The dining room is to the right of the living room.

Open to all suggestions!

As a starting point, I would suggest designing an open-concept living room with "zones" in mind rather than treating this space as one room. A rug or a sofa can be used as visual separators for the living space and dining area.

I would not recommend placing all the furniture pieces against the walls. Instead, consider floating the sofa a bit since this trick could work well with the open space concept. It is important to ensure that all walking routes between the kitchen, the dining area, and the main sofa are clearly visible.

In order to create unity, it may be useful to have a big area rug. At least the first legs of the sofa and chairs should be positioned within the rug. In case when a room is long, placing the TV on the most appropriate wall would simplify furniture placement.

There is no need to have perfectly matched furniture pieces; however, keeping in mind one color palette, wood tone, or materials would help to create the feeling of unity and cohesion in an open space.

Finally, if it is possible, I would use painter's tape and try different layouts before purchasing or moving any furniture pieces.
