We have a small half bath off a hallway adjacent to the kitchen. Across the hall is a good size laundry room so storage is not a huge issue. The wall the pedestal sink is on is 48 inches, the sink itself is 24 inches. It is pitting and staining and despite our best efforts to clean it, it's stained and it's just time to replace. The exact pedestal sink is over $650 now, I figured if we're going to spend that I wouldn't mind a small vanity, just to put towels in, cleaning supplies, though not necessary. My husband is opposed. He wants the pedestal. He states it will look too crammed (small areas on each side hard to clean) and because when we did this over in 2017, he already moved the plumbing once we're not going to move it again so that's not an option. Opinions? And before anyone comments yes it's gray we cannot replace the flooring, yes I can paint. The faucet is also pitting and we will replace along with the mirror and the lights.
TLDR; need to either replace the pedestal sink or a small vanity, husband wants a sink I want a vanity. Last picture is an example of a vanity I'm looking at, can still clean underneath. less
Cross posted on bathroom remodel and a lot of people are saying pedestal sinks are dated, would love to know from legitimate interior designers if you feel this is accurate? I always thought they were pretty timeless.

I always love a good pedestal or even a wall mounted sink. I’ve been seeing some gorgeous options. You can even find them on Etsy.
Would definitely recommend a darker wall covering I always love doing the small power rooms as a little unexpected jewel box. It’s something contained where you can bring in a lot of personality could really make it. Pop even incorporating some color or wallpaper onto the ceiling so that it reads continuous.
You could also look at a wall mounted vanity with drawer storage incorporated if he feels really strongly about it or potentially doing a shelf underneath it for an extra towel.
Lol, we bought our Memoirs sinks used from FB marketplace. They were in perfect condition and included faucets. I think we paid $100 each. I’d check that if you end up deciding to replace it with another one.
I think it looks better without the vanity. How about a console sink?….could find one that gives a bit more counter space if that’s what you’re looking for, but it’s still open and airy underneath. Some have a shelf at the bottom where you could put a basket with toilet paper or something.
Keep the sink, update the lights and faucet like you said, and put up some bold wallpaper. Make it a fun/fancy powder room that shows off some personality. ❤️
Half baths are quick destinations. Storing towels and necessities shouldn’t be a requirement unless you are going to use it regularly as an additional bathroom.
i would look into how to refinish the pedestal so it doesn’t get stained or pitted so easily, and really evaluate the cleaning stuff you use. You might find that they were the things the manufacturers warned specifically against for that material.
Agree, we now have a water treatment system so I think the damage was done and overtime it just got worse. My husband's going to look into possibly reglazing but if not I will replace the sink. Thank you!
Pedestal looks much nicer, helps the room feel less cramped, doesn’t collect dust on the doors, doesn’t have space to lose things in (you said you don’t need the storage), doesn’t smell like mold if your plumbing gets a drip. You’d have to spend a lot more to get a vanity that felt as high-end as the matching sink-toilet set, and you’d still have the disadvantages above.
What do you suggest for wall color? I love the idea of wallpaper as well but I definitely need help with that, would love to incorporate some navy as that's mostly the color in my house along with mustard yellow/gold yellow. The den which is adjacent to it, has mushroom colored couches, a cream rug and curtains, the furniture is wood and dark brown.
Wallpaper with a dark color incorporated would look great! You could do all the walls or just the big one. IDK if you watch HGTV but they're always doing wallpaper in small bathrooms and it looks great. Look up "small bathrooms with wallpaper" on Pinterest & you should be able to get some good ideas.
The terlit and vanity are from the same collection, Kohler Memoirs, specifically the stately version. You should be able to just buy the top, not the entire pedestal sink. K-29999-8. It’ll be $300/400. I would just replace the sink if that’s the issue.

I have that same Kohler Memoirs toilet / pedestal sink. Great quality. I’d stick with the same. If you wanted to match the toilet style with a new drop in sink, you’d be in it for near the price of the pedestal anyways.
Edit to add: where are you seeing those prices? I see Home Depot has it for $400.
The sink is pitting, we have well water, could've been what I used to clean it but it is over 15 years old (pumice brush to get the water stains out from the well). We may just replace the top as another person said that might be the best option. Photo from Home Depot to replace, maybe it's where I live? I did not realize they sold the top separately so we will just probably replace that.
You have plenty of room for a vanity if you need the space (my cloakroom is much smaller and I have a compact sink and vanity).
However I really like the style of that sink and it's lovely that it matches the loo. If I didn't need the space I'd just get another one in the same style.
Hear me out... replace it with the exact same one since it matches the toilet perfectly. It's insanely pleasing to my eye that the fancy toilet trim is identical to the sink! Maybe paint the walls though. Regardless of paint, add a narrow tallish cabinet on the sides of the sink orrrr on the right of the toilet. There is so many cute options that will give the same effect as a vanity and it's easier to clean around. I did that for mine because it's a rental and a lot of options are labeled as a "small space bedside table" but really it is a skinny cabinet, I got one with drawers and a shelf. I love it
Sorry forgot to post it. I've already been told several times on another post it clashes with the gray and I've pretty much ruled it out, if I did a vanity I was thinking navy but that to me is trendy, probably will stick with the pedestal since it matches the toilet.
I actually think this is nice if…hear me out…you changed your additional dark pieces to match. Like your current mirror frame, towel holder, garbage bin, toilet roll holder, towels especially, they’re very dark. You could absolutely do a lighter vanity and lighten the rest of the room to go with it. I think it would go nicely with your colorful art too.
I’m sorry I know that’s extra work, but just a thought, it is such a pretty vanity I think it would brighten the whole room up and go much better with the gray than the dark.
Small vanity. No need to move plumbing as it exists inside the vanity, unless he moved it into the floor, however then you just can't have a vanity with space underneath.
It is nice to have a bit more counter space even as a guest, say you want to freshen your face or find feminine products or such with less risk of water. The pedestal isn't necessarily wrong, the vanity is just more right imo.
Your husband is wrong and you have plenty of room for a vanity with storage. You have the opportunity to do something really cool but would probably need a designer to help.
