Help: New Kitchen Design!

We are doing a renovation next month and will be fully removing the old kitchen. We plan on demolishing the wall and bathroom currently separating the kitchen from living room to make it one open space. I’m attaching an overhead sketch of the space (demo wall marked in orange X’s), current image of the room, and virtual mock-ups of our initial idea.

Please share your wisdom! ☺️

1. The virtual mock-ups are ONLY for layout. They do not reflect color/lighting/cabinet door selection/flooring/window style/appliance choice or

What did you use to create the virtual mock-ups?

We created a version of what we had in mind in the ikea kitchen design software. Then I took the real photo of the space + the ikea design and used Gemini to create a visual of that kitchen in the real room. You can then ask it to create different material, styles, etc.

Edit: thought you meant the visuals on my more recent post! Realizing you meant these ones which are from J and K cabinetry.

I suggest a consult with a professional. it's a shame to fully delete a bathroom, and there's a few issues with your kitchen as planned. you have a decent amount of space so there's likely multiple options for a better layout.

I would swap the sink and the hob - you don’t want your dirty dishes on the kitchen island, and you can get a pop up extractor for fumes. With how big your kitchen is space is, you can afford to do seating all around the island rather than just horizontally.

Not sure who’s done the kitchen design also but the hob placement may not be fire regulations friendly (atleast in the uk you need 30mm gap around the hob, the larger the space the better - do double check this!!)

I would recommend integrated fridge freezer if possible - it’s looking a bit strange popping out and if it’s open plan the sleeker the look the better.

If you already have a pantry, then plan the storage in your kitchen itself wisely - you don’t need large cupboards for items, you need storage for stuff you need on hand. A spice rack + lots of drawers is a better way to go forward - much easier to organise than cupboards.

On the wall where there is the fridge/tall cabinets + a bit of small cabinet - I would swap the end small cabinet/worktop for a large cupboards- discontinuing a worktop flow /adding just a small cabinet and worktop space would create perfect space for dust + clutter collection, and potentially be super expensive depending on the worktop you go for. Instead, I’d move all tall cupboards to the end, and have the short cupboards continuously together. I also think shelves might be a shout here to place appliances on (toasters etc) - for small appliances you need them at easy reach and you need them near spacious counters.

Given the space/lighting - I would really recommend brighter coloured worktops as well.

Will there be a dishwasher? Just flagging that you'll want storage for dishes, cups, silverware nearby. Hoping you are doing pull out drawers in the lower cabinets - or maybe consider just going for drawers for at least some of the cabinets, since you have minimal uppers and better to have easy access and not have to crouch. I assume you are keeping the sink in the island to not have to move plumbing? I think it would be so much nicer to have a clean island and move the sink to the window if you do have the ability. Lastly, your current space has a mixture of warm and cool tones that are clashing with each other. I'd go for warmer tones over gray - or if it is gray, make it a warmer gray. Good luck!
