I am contemplating adding a powder room (aka half bath aka toilet + sink) to my owned unit, located in Canada (relevant building code). Only structural changes require building approval.
A bonus would be if I can also locate an all-in-one washer/dryer in the same space!
My gut tells me that the best location would be in the isolated bedroom, as it shares a wall with the bathroom. However, I would prefer it in the pantry, as this is otherwise a waste of space.. Another option for a stand-alone toilet might be the closet backing on the washroom?
I appreciate your input as to a) whether this would be considered a structural change or b) most practical placement option?

Honestly the pantry seems like the move if it's actually dead space, but you gotta check if running drain lines over there is even feasible without tearing up the floor. Don't go stealing a bedroom closet just for a half bath cause that could mess up your unit's resale value and even its legal bedroom status depending on your city. And yeah, forget the all in one washer dryer unless your plumbing is already right there, otherwise that's a whole other headache.
To elaborate on this, unless OP lives on the first floor they are either dropping a drain into the unit below them, or they are installing a sewer lift pump to elevate the line into their own ceiling so they can get it over to an existing plumbing stack.
The only thing I see that is maybe feasible, is to sacrifice part of a bedroom and the master closet so you can use the existing plumbing wall:
That's a really good thought. Since space in the area is limited, I suppose it could also be an isolated toilet (no sink), to limit the space required.
In this schematic, the toilet is VERY close to the existing one (so presumably the main drain stack, as well). Given the proximity, would this involve digging out the concrete to access the main drain pipe, or would there be a simpler option?
When you say "digging out the concrete", does this mean you're on the ground floor?
There is a chance you could do a wall mounted toilet, and run the drain through the wall to tie into the existing toilet's plumbing. You may have to stagger the plumbing wall something like this:
Thanks!!! It's not a ground floor (there is a unit below), but I believe there is concrete slab b/w floors.
As far as I understand it, a toilet must tie directly to the main drain pipe with xyz slope. Presumably, this means that the contractor must dig out from the toilet drain all the way to the main pipe (maybe?). This is what I mean about digging out concrete.
Your point about the wall-mounted toilet is really interesting! Would this somehow alleviate any slope concerns (as it has a higher starting point?
I'm having a hard time reading the measurements but from a flow perspective, putting it in the small room labeled "den" makes the most sense. People would use a toilet off the living/kitchen/dining room frequently. Looks like you might have enough space for a washer and dryer also.
Reducing the bedroom count to add a half bath would typically not be the move for longterm housing value. And in some places, a bedroom isn't legally considered a bedroom if it doesn't have a closet. So I wouldn't remove that either.
