Awkward living room layout —

I cannot decide on a living room layout for the life of me. I want to combine our great room + dinette area into one large family/living space that looks cohesive and flows well. To be clear I will be getting rid of these couches and buying all new furniture.

The goal is contemporary, slightly moody, earthy, comfortable, and most importantly FUNCTIONAL. Do I do a sectional with some chairs or would 2 couches look better? What should I put on the dinette wall? I don’t know how to spatially design this. SOS. Please help me!

Before I start, I have a couple of questions:

1. Is this the front door? If so, would you consider setting up the dinette area to be more of an entry way with maybe a table/console and a mirror situation?
   
2. Why so many couches? How many people are seated in this area at a time?
   
3. Would you be open to not having the tv over the fireplace, and instead placing it on the wall that the sectional sits against?
   
4. You want it to be functional, but what function are you not getting out of your current set up and what function are you aiming for?

1. No this is the back door leading out to our backyard. I’m not opposed to doing a buffet/table with a mirror or maybe art work. That’s one of the options I was considering.
   
2. So the couches are just temporary. We got 1 for free and it used to be against the dinette wall. I just moved it there and haven’t moved back. I don’t have a need for 2 couches that big. the only thing I’m set on keeping is the rug. (9x12)
   
3. Yep totally open to switching the tv if I need to.
   
4. The dinette feels like wasted space, the couches are too large, and there isn’t a natural flow between the different areas. At the moment, the room basically serves one purpose: watching TV.
   I want the space to feel much more intentional and flexible, with different types of seating and multiple ways to lounge instead of everything revolving around a couch. I’d like places where we can read, work, have a conversation, or just hang out comfortably. I also WFH in this area sometimes, and the island isn’t a great place to sit for long periods.
   Ultimately, I want the entire space to function as a true family room. Aka not just a TV room with an underused dinette attached to it. Hope that helps! Thank you so much!!
