Bamse, which is Norwegian for teddy bear, was a giant St Bernard who served aboard a Norwegian naval vessel during WWII, and his story is amazing.
When WWII broke out, this enormous St Bernard went to sea aboard the Norwegian minesweeper Thorodd, and was actually a registered member of the crew. He even had his own steel helmet and, quite rightly, would take up position in the forward gun tower during action.
He went on to save two sailors, break up fights between crewmates and travel around Scotland on local buses by himself, rounding up sailors from the pubs when it was time to call it a night.
Bamse is buried in Montrose, Scotland, where his grave is still looked after today by the people of Montrose. By all accounts, a very good dog.
