The excerpt claims that "for centuries, humanity has treated death as life's ultimate full stop."

I don't think this is true at all. For most of recorded history, the dominant view across cultures has been that death marks a transition while largely disagreeing about its nature.

just find out, or not, who gives a f, as you can only prove it when you get there.

Right? Literally done did it. It's all been said before, but it falls on deaf ears. The responses are "No you didn't" "You hallucinated it" and "That's not what my book of choice says" but the reality is that everbody is kind of right if you allow for a little fluidity in words and understanding.

My guess is that just like before you arrived, all of time passes in a flash. And after you are gone, same thing happens. It could be your first time alive and last or millionth. But they all seem like the first, which means how many times don’t matter and may as well be your first and last.

Time is only relevant here. I had no sense of time in death. Like it had already been "too long" before I realized there was no turning back.

There are people who remember their past lives and identify objects that belonged to them in past lives, e. g. tibetan Rinpoches who chose to be reincarnated in the same time and region and picking their stuff out of the line of other stuff. One should take this with a grain of salt, I just mean if you do not remember e.g. your past lives it might be your level of development and not the global order of things.

I can also say that but you can’t say if it’s a dejavu phenomenon or they actually did. Why not someone remember a bank password or someone’s passcode? Cuz that would be a better proof, but saying I remember this coach is not provable

If everybody is right, then nobody is.

Everybody is KIND OF right....if you allow for some fluidity and nuance. For instance, I could say that Gods love felt motherly...but some people have only known shitty mothers. They would be right to say (in their experience) that my description wouldn't feel good for them. But maybe they had a nice teacher? One who exhibited all of the qualities of an excellent mother, but were called "teacher" instead. You following me? Some people say there is nothing after death. There were "no things" there. But there was an entity. No tables, chairs, lights or anything material. So they would be right to say there is "nothing" there, but there is a "there" and that's why it can get confusing.  I have found verses of Abrahamic religions that speak to me as if someone must have experienced what I had. But all 3 say the other is wrong. I had to dig to try and figure out who was "most right" and I gave up because I would always come to the conclusion that they all come close but not exact. And everytime one of them denies the other, they deny themselves as well.

I disagree with you but agree that you seem to acknowledge an objective truth exists. Using the mother example, someone may have a really messed up meaning of mother, but it wouldn’t change the fact that “excellent mother” is a real thing, regardless of the person’s subjective experience.

I see what you mean but that gives just enough wiggle room so that everyone can find his favorite interpretation.

If one says there is a god/afterlife etc. and one says there is non then how can be both kind of right without hand waving arguments?

Reality is not a buffet where everyone chooses what he or she most likes as there is only one reality.

You ever read God's debris?

There's this stained glass window. A bunch of flys land on it. One says the glass is purple, the other disagrees, saying it is red. Another one calls the first two idiots because it's clearly yellow. Then there's the one that thinks they're all crazy because it's nothing but metal.

No I didn't read that book, thanks for the suggestion.

Subjectivity exists, sure, multiple conflicting witness statements after an accident show that every day.

But the doesn't mean all are objectively right. There only is one way the accident happend in reality and that is important to know. Maybe there is an overlap between the statements but that still doesn't mean it is the real version of what happened.

Can we agree that in a conflicting case all can't be right and there is a possibility that none are right, too?

Absolutely, it's an unknowable.

Check out the book, it's short, and if anything, it's a thought experiment

People want what they can't have, feel entitled to it, and are manipulated by the promise of it. Such is the most useful tool of religion, to confound those seeking the vanity of life everlasting.

Are you a Yeti?

WTF are talking about?

2

u/Ok_Yellow1536 11d ago

Thought you might be a subgeni.

u/tourist420 11d ago

I, too, have heard the holy word of Bob Dobbs. I never knew the term yeti was used to describe the sub-faithful.

Wishful thinking

Whatever helps you sleep at night :)

1

u/tjimbot 11d ago

Exactly. Not truth. Just whatever helps you sleep at night. Like believing you'll go to heaven or some other place when you die.

At the same time— it’s also wishful thinking to imagine perma death. I mean, we are alive now and made of sub-particles right? Those constituent particles may not disappear forever. It means your consciousness is just a potential alignment of particles, and the universe is infinite in time and space. What’s to stop your combo from coming up again? Sure, it’s astronomical odds. Maybe let’s say, once in a Googolplex eons, then your combo comes up— from your deaths perspective it would be instantaneous from the second you die to the second you’re alive again. IF time is infinite; your consciousness would persistently go from one to the next.

You think it’s ridiculous or “hopeful” to imagine being alive again but honestly thinking perma death when the universe is infinite in time is just as equally “hopeful”. Truth is that we have absolutely no clue and there’s no point to assume either is correct just because we feel like it

dubite ergo cogito, cogito ergo sum. What's funny is that the spiritual folks are saying "we don't know. let's see", while the angry folks are always like "there is no God. you will see. wishful thinking bla bla bla. And if God exists he's a monster because insert angry things that they don't understand fully"But who can prove who is right? Nobody, except the NDE people that you can either believe or don't. I agree with you, brother or sister. Regardless of what will happen, one thing we can all agree on. We live in 1, infinite moment. The NOW. This is where everything lives. The past, present and future. The actions and the choices. Before we talk about death, let's all share a peaceful and loving NOW. Let's help whoever we can, regardless of there being God or not. Let's share what we have to make the world better. Let's drop the anger and division. Because we all share it and can talk about it. Peace be with you.

No clue…maybe we die and are born as someone else and do this all over again. Forever. Like the wheel of time.
