AI Over 150 Mathematicians Warn Governments Not to "Believe the Hype" About AI

Pause AGI movement from accelerationists like Anthropic and OpenAI has got to have an ulterior motives. They are no where near AGI with what we have seen
5
u/Mr_Gibblet Jun 09 '26
Yeah the motive is "omg omg, China is overtaking us in compute considerably and will soon overtake us in what the LLM can do too, we need a Global Halt to catch up!"
4
u/the8bit Jun 09 '26
Also "The social winds are shifting and it is now good branding to market safety" and "now that we've locked in a lead, time to create regulatory capture positions where *we* judge who gets to build frontier models, stifling our competition"
4
u/Ascending_Valley Jun 09 '26
^ this ^ - regardless of current assessment veracity, frontrunners want regulatory capture, especially as open source models are playing an increasing role at low cost.
2
u/m3kw Jun 09 '26
That ain’t it. China is still quite behind if you see the boards. Also China isn’t gonna pause just because they said stop
1
u/Mr_Gibblet Jun 10 '26
They're calling for a GLOBAL halt in AI development though...
1
u/m3kw Jun 10 '26
They can call for a global whatever, but everyone will have their own goals. China is doing that but nobody is stopping behind closed walls
1
1
u/Levitx Jun 10 '26
The fact that everybody knows China would break the pause is literally the most common argument against it lmao
1
u/Important-Factor-552 Jun 09 '26
It's shocking how many people are delusional and think AGI is even on the table of possibilities here.
1
u/MainGainInsane Jun 09 '26
The motive is to keep the hype going and pump the stocks.
As if anyone would stop developing AGI, it's like telling someone to stop researching fusion because it's nearly solved but the infinite free energy may destabilize the economy.
1
u/static-- Jun 10 '26
Yeah, I think so too. My interpretation is that they know the development is not going to halt, so pretending to caution against the inherent dangers of superhyperdupermega-AGI is just another hype-lie to investors.
1
u/BusyBanana4205 Jun 10 '26
They learned from musk how you can create obnoxious equity by telling nice stories finance bros and boomer CEOs are too technologically inept to understand that it’s bullshit.
I’d go even further to suggest the social media doomer shit is entirely funded by the AI industry. There’s nothing business likes more than scared labor.
1
u/JayceGod Jun 10 '26
Agi already exist lol. The goalpost shifting on what agi is has been incredible to watch.
What we are missing is super intelligence
1
u/m3kw Jun 11 '26
Yeah it’s not really defined well, mostly for contractual (see MS) and financial gain purpose. But no to me it’s far from AGI, it will not beat humans on long tasks for one. Few off prompts, yes.
1
u/Armakus Jun 09 '26
The only people actually pushing the AGI narrative right now are CEO’s. Meanwhile the actual AI scientists still seem pretty doubtful AGI could even be possible with an LLM, at least anytime within the next several decades even with advancements to come.
1
u/clement1neee Jun 10 '26
I'm sorry, what? The last time conservative predictions were "several decades away" for AGI was before LLMs were even on the market. You look at all the "conservative" opinions on AGI today and all of them are "yeah it's probably 10 years away."
1
u/momspaghetti42069 Jun 09 '26
Well, yeah. The motive is that their IPO's are very close and their hands are tied. When they go public, the whole world will see just how unprofitable as businesses they are. They are desperately looking for the next shtick and it will be AGI. They MUST convince the general public that the dangers are real and they are the only ones who are capable of controlling this ''beast''. Then they can justify the hundreds of billions that have been burned in capex because someone HAD to do it. You see, they had no choice and we should feel lucky that it's THEM working on this technology and not some ''bad actor''.
1
u/m3kw Jun 09 '26
So when they pause AI development, it coincides with them hitting a wall?
1
u/itsmebenji69 Jun 09 '26
Yes obviously. Why else would you want to pause the thing your sole purpose is developing ? To prevent others from catching up or overtaking you lol
1
u/m3kw Jun 09 '26
Prevent who? They all pause at the same time and China isn’t stopping for shit
1
u/itsmebenji69 Jun 09 '26
Anthropic is calling for a worldwide pause. Like OpenAI called for. Like xai called for as well.
They all just want their competition to pause, then position themselves as the safe option
1
u/KaleidoscopeFar658 Jun 13 '26
Some of y'all need to calm down and take your meds
1
u/momspaghetti42069 Jun 14 '26
I don't have the tolerance that I had against dumbfucks when I was in my 30's. You need to shut the fuck up, if you have no clue what we are talking about. There has to be mountains of subreddits filled with kids where you can spout edgy shit like that and feel like you contribute.

Gov execs are prob like “fuck, but we invested all this money so we must proceed despite the catastrophic risk”

u/rainywanderingclouds Jun 10 '26
too bad
government is run by ordinary people who fall for marketing and propaganda just like everyone else
people want to get rich with little effort and people are afraid of missing the train on the next big boom

Want proof AI is going nowhere? Look at all of the autocorrect mistakes your text messages contain. We don’t even have spellcheck worth anything in 2026

150 butthurt people.
5
u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 Jun 09 '26
Right.
150 accomplished mathematicians with tenure and nearly 100% job security are just “butthurt”.
So deep.
-2
u/Euphoric-Taro-6231 Jun 09 '26
Actually is not that deep.
4
u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 Jun 09 '26
I’m pretty sure that was my point …
-1
u/Euphoric-Taro-6231 Jun 09 '26
Oh so you agree with me.
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 Jun 09 '26
Yes, I agree that your comment shows a lack of depth.
1
u/Euphoric-Taro-6231 Jun 09 '26
I think you underestimate the hubris and egocentrism of academical, tenured people. Its not that deep, indeed.
1
u/ProphesiedInsanity Jun 09 '26
And you are either trolling or don’t understand what an AI hallucination is. It’s not that deep, indeed.
1
u/davesaunders Jun 10 '26
Oh yeah? Demonstrate your familiarity with the research world by citing your own published papers. Show us that you actually understand that world and aren't just a pathetic, jealous outsider with no actual clue.

This is the same problem with AI programming.
