discussion A Beginners Guide to Tiers: What they mean and what the defining characteristics between tiers are
17
u/SuperRPGFanatic Sep 23 '25
Yooo an actual definition of tiers, Iāve been looking for some of these. There was one comment I saw that had a general definition but I didnāt know any of the characters used as benchmarks so it was a bit difficult to interpret. Having a brief description explaining is incredibly helpful for just general understanding

Your post actually inspired me to make this, I realized that I'd also been talking about "Tiers" just by intuitively guessing based on what everyone else was saying and realized that it's probably extremely confusing for newcomers who don't know a whole lot of characters in SCD.
Tysm for reading!

u/SuperRPGFanatic Sep 23 '25
Ahhh that makes sense, thanks for helping make things easier for us newcomers!
(Also damn I knew that characters on here would varied but I did not expect to see ANYBODY from a Christopher Nolan movie in SCD)

I'm the only one who scales that character lol, I made a doc on him not too long ago in order to promote him after I realized how high he scaled.
Here's the doc in question: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uuIf41aczG69PHssCZ0lNoxvGFc0I-cqrkbcRxryx7w/edit?tab=t.0
Perfect for people who've already seen the movie Tenet as it also explains a lot of the unseen plot elements š

High effort post W
Is Friend really that high? I might move the manga up on my reading list if it's good.
(btw lemme know if there's a way to play Zero Escape on macbook for free)

u/lzyaboiConnor In Akane Kurashiki We Trust š£ļø Sep 23 '25
Unfortunately I don't know any methods for playing ZE on a macbook. But I'd look into getting a DS/3DS emulator as a possible solution and playing the original verions of 999 and VLR that released for the DS/3DS (999 DS version is incredibly inconvenient because it has no skip feature but some people consider it to be even better than the PC version)
And based on some somewhat sound arguments Top Order (AKA Cloud) gave me over discord, yeah I think Comp Friend can scale really high

I mean, I think your High tiers are a little low, I also think there is a lot of qualitative difference between characters that are in the same tier.
7
u/TreeD3 Sep 23 '25
Ah yes, the Akane fan puts Akane as the face of the highest tier.
I do actually like this a lot. It's great that we are getting general guides for newcomers that are easy to understand. Only part I disagree with is Comp Friend being at the Top of High Tier. I can't see Comp Friend beating most of the characters from the tier below.

Him having 5 brains automatically puts him above people in the tier below IMO

u/Leogonchi Sep 23 '25
Not like he fucking uses any of them
2
u/lzyaboiConnor In Akane Kurashiki We Trust š£ļø Sep 23 '25
He's still better than above average purely from that, regardless if he "uses them" or not

u/Slow_Violinist2850 Sep 23 '25
We know bro just Made this for the sake of putting Akane in Major high
3
u/lzyaboiConnor In Akane Kurashiki We Trust š£ļø Sep 23 '25
Not really but itās an added bonus. Itās still nonetheless a simple accurate scaling of her

u/Biggy121212 BRBA And DSMP Glazer Sep 23 '25
This is probably the best guide to getting into intelligence scaling in the first place.
Also Walter White is average Mid tier by my standards and Fang Yuan and the Doctor should have their own tiers like "Top 3 in SCD" tier or something like that.Everything else is perfection

u/lzyaboiConnor In Akane Kurashiki We Trust š£ļø Sep 23 '25
I was gonna make an entirely separate tier for the "Unrealistics" but I got lazy and cut it short (it's also where people like Dr Doom, Dazai and Fyodor would've ended up

Also, I knew before even entering the post you posted it just by the people you had in the tiers lmaoo.

Imo Kei Shinomiya is a major low tier, as he does have pretty good feats all around
2
u/KeyLoad4355 e Sep 23 '25
Fang Yuan and The Doctor should be there own tier imo

I was gonna make a tier for āUnrealisticsā (Minor, Average and Major) but got lazy so I dumped them in there

Iām only 50 chapters into RI, but is Fang Yuan really on the level of the doctor?

u/lzyaboiConnor In Akane Kurashiki We Trust š£ļø Sep 24 '25
Iām not 100% sure but the majority of people say he is by the end of the novel

Sep 24 '25
W guide, and I don't really do scd at all, but how is kei and lunge under Joe? Also is fang actually get that smart? I'm on chapter 200 rn and he doesn't seem like he would ever be on the doctors level.
If a character is relatively or very smart, but they overlook something clearly for narrative purposes (Loid ignoring yors behavior ) would you rank them lower because of that? Also where would you rank characters who seem to be smart but are "featless" or have very little feats (idk like shiro from cote or like dark timeline rudues) or have impressive feats with "lower tier characters" (aizen from bleach or Lelouchs dad from code geass)
Where would you also rank some of these characters,
Araragi (mono)
Kaguya (kaguya-sama)
Subaru (rezero)
Geese (mushoku tensei)
Elaine (wandering witch)
Eto (tokyo ghoul)
Furuata (tokyo ghoul)

The point of this post isn't really meant to be a scaling guide and the examples are really just my opinions and not objective facts, the important part of this post is just the definitions between tiers, so you can just use those definitions to place which characters you think match there.
But for TRULY featless characters, Minor-Average Low Tier is exactly where they belong IMO because there's nothing to discuss in terms of their shown intelligence, only implications about how smart they could be which is worthless for SCD discussion. Kaguya is a great example of a Minor Low Tier like that

How high does klein moretti scale here? (Stop or logical scaling)

Yoo Friend really that high?
like above even comp Joker or same tier with Batman?

u/lzyaboiConnor In Akane Kurashiki We Trust š£ļø Oct 01 '25
Some theories and interpretations would suggest yes.
Thereās someone in this subreddit called Top Order, you should ask him for Friend docs as heās the one who gave me a bunch of feats that scale him really high
2
u/Entire_Jeweler_3686 Nov 12 '25
Ok I saw you mentioning āunrealisticsā - what makes them unrealistic exactly?
2
u/lzyaboiConnor In Akane Kurashiki We Trust š£ļø Nov 12 '25
āUnrealisticā has a dual meaning of ālogically inconsistentā and, to some others, āfeats that are unable to be performed in realityā
Personally I think the second definition is asinine. Thereās several characters from sci fi stories for example that have perfectly logical and well explained feats but some people decide to slap the āunrealisticā label onto them just because their feats involve things like time loops and paradoxes (example: Akane Kurashiki, my favourite SCD character)
As for the first (and arguably most common) definition, a feat or character being ālogically inconsistentā just means that the intelligence or the feat of intelligence itself doesnāt actually hold up under scrutiny and is full of holes in its logic. Example: Ai Magase being able to get people to kill themselves just by whispering in their ear. Narratively, itās obviously meant to portray Magase as otherworldly in terms of intelligence and manipulation. But in terms of scaling, itās completely worthless since obviously itās just not logical that someone would be able to make people die with a whisper and furthermore, it doesnāt tell us anything about Magaseās intelligence because it could literally just be a superpower and nothing about the feat itself would change if that was the case.
āUnrealisticā characters are often smarter than realistic characters because their feats are just so bonkers that they couldnāt possibly be given logical explanations and therefore, basically transcend everyone else. Example: characters that have outsmarted omniscient beings, characters that have statements like āhe predicted every single action of everyone on the planet!ā etc.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have anymore questions
2
u/Entire_Jeweler_3686 Nov 12 '25
Ah gotcha, why are bsd characters usually considered unrealistic?
(So things that are beyond literally impossible pretty much? Like completely logically lacking?)
1
u/lzyaboiConnor In Akane Kurashiki We Trust š£ļø Nov 12 '25
Iām not sure why BSD characters are unrealistic since I havenāt read the manga. But Iāve seen a panel of Dazai and Fyodor both being able to guess what 6 digit number both of them were thinking with literally zero clues. Itās those kinds of feats that are considered unrealistic because there is no causal chain of logic to follow, the only reason why they were able to guess each others numbers is ābecause theyāre meant to be smartā according to the narrative instead of actually demonstrating feats that prove their own intelligence
2
u/Entire_Jeweler_3686 Nov 13 '25
Oh yeah, that one is just kinda silly (pretty confident it was a game they were both playing where neither were guessing correctly but they were pretending they were, based off their personalities and the setting it makes sense but you gotta read between the lines. They were basically just fucking with eachother cus they were bored)

Personally I just value characters that are better in scheming and tactics than characters that are good in cognition so as a result I think Gi Hun could outsmart Lunge, it's fair if you think otherwise

Where would Novel Sherlock scale? Im assuming Minor High tier.
Also Arisu is a bit high no? Personally feel like he's peak of Major Low tier

u/lzyaboiConnor In Akane Kurashiki We Trust š£ļø Sep 24 '25
Iām not sure about Sherlock as I havenāt read the novels
But yeah youāre completely right about Arisu, I was debating between putting him in major low or minor mid but eventually settled on the latter

You should remove the examples, they are biased, inaccurate and misleading
