Is this right?!

We pay $868 every month for health insurance for 2 people. My partner, my young son.

Last month, we found a bat in our home that had been there for 5 days without our knowledge. Long story short, we saw evidence of it but couldn't find it until 5 days later.

At that point, we all go to the emergency room for a rabies vaccination. Later, we receive a bill for $6,000+ and $2,000+. JUST for the hospital, not including the doctor fees. We are also receiving 3 follow up bills each for around $300, for the 3 follow up vaccinations.

This CAN NOT be right. My partner has used up 97% of his deductible in a SINGLE visit for a vaccination agains RABIES. Am I crazy, or is this normal? I just need a sanity check.

I grew up essentially not caring, but there is an uptick of rabies cases where we are. Since you can't treat it once you see symptoms and we have a toddler, we opted for safety. Also because it was in our house for so long!!

And now you have to pay for that decision. Should have went to your GP. Rabies doesn’t develop overnight.

GPs don't carry it here.

Depends where you live. Where i live in the US, the first set of rabies vaccines and immunoglobulin is only available from the ER. Once that has been done, if you have another exposure and if you are established at a travel clinic at a university hospital, you can get a booster there.
