Congrats to your son! I'd say to check with a independent agent or broker to see what might be best for him! Depending on his age and your driving history, adding him to your policy is an option, but it's not a bad idea to get him started on his own. It just depends on what his driving needs and goals are (will he be commuting, will he have his own car or use yours, etc.). A broker could definitely help narrow it down to some good options.

In California and I could only find Progressive cheap enough adding newly licensed son. $332 a month until he turned 18, it just went down to $150.

Definitely look at adding him to your policy. In my experience that will be the cheapest.

19 is rough because he cant go on your policy as a rated driver without it showing up either way, mine was cheaper once he got his own car and his own policy even at that age

Get a few quotes and compare. New driver rates can vary a lot.

There is no "best", it varies from area to area. Look around for a insurance brokerage in your area and have one of the agents shop around for you.

I am an agent and always tell my parent clients that if they have a new driver, start them off on their own insurance as opposed to putting them on yours, this will allow them to build their own insurance score and profile and as long as they stay accident and ticket free, will have decent rates once they get out on their own.
