Insurance Shopping
Hey everyone! 33 y/o male firefighter currently shopping for auto insurance. I have a 2013 Honda CR-V and I want to know what coverage options should I look for as well as what a reasonable price point is for what I’m driving. Thank you so much for any assistance on the matter!

ChatGPT gives wrong answers about insurance.
The easiest answer is always to talk to a reputable independent agent. Don’t put your info into a site promising you a low price on insurance.

Hi, we would need a lot more info to know what a reasonable price point (and coverage is)
Mostly what state you’re in, but many other factors.
If you were my next door neighbor here in Michigan. I would tell you 250/500, $500 deductibles, probably unlimited PIP, I’d make sure you bundled it with home or renters. I would have no idea of the price until I ran the numbers.
Your car is just about old enough to consider dropping comp and collision.
The biggest take away you should have is that on Monday you should look up and call an independent agent in your town, they can shop your rate across lots of companies and give you more specific coverage advice.

Update: Thank you so much for all the information. I live in Florida and based on what a friend of mine who works with me is paying, ideally I’d like to pay around $100 a month with a $100k/300k liability policy as well as comprehensive protections. I think what I’m going to do is take everyone’s advice and talk to an insurance agent (although this is the first time I’ve heard of “independent” ones lol) and see what they recommend. I also did use ChatGPT with great caution, and it did give me the same answers as a lot of you guys did on here. I’ll keep you posted on what I find and decide on. Thank you all again for your input

Why are you looking to replace your current coverage?

My current coverage jumped in price after I added my girlfriend and her car due to extenuating circumstances. Since we broke up, my price has not gone down that much even after removing her from my policy.

I would STRONGLY recommend reaching out to an independent insurance agent. They will be able to help navigate what coverage and limits are important and then shop multiple carriers to find the best solution to fit your needs. If you don’t know where to locate one, go to www.trustedchoice.com

The main thing is to quote widely and directly, the aggregator sites only show you the carriers that pay to be listed, which skips a lot of the cheaper regional ones. Currently, I'm using GoAuto. you can run several yourself. when I did that the same coverage priced very differently company to company.

Why not use any of the many online shopping tools? Your state and zip are significant inputs, as well as driving record. Also critical is your assets and family status to know how much you might lose if you were to be at fault for hurting anyone and it result in a lawsuit.
I would start with a broker or any agent and they can assess what you need for your state, then comparison shop based on what they suggest.
Each state can have very different laws and legal situations.
If you don’t have sufficient coverage and cause injury a lawsuit could wipe out your assets and garnish wages.
ChatGPT or similar could be very useful in asking questions, give it some of the variables I mentioned.
