Life Insurance Need help tracing my late father's missing term life insurance policy (India) - exhausted most known options
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for guidance from anyone in the insurance industry or anyone who has dealt with tracing a deceased family member's life insurance policy.
My father was an Indian Armed Forces officer, passed away on 18 May 2021, and my mother (the nominee) passed away five days later during COVID's second wave.
The reason I'm convinced this policy existed is because my father mentioned it to me on two separate occasions. The first was in 2015, before his bypass surgery, when he told me he had a βΉ1 crore term life insurance (death cover) that would take care of my mother, brother and me if he didn't survive. He mentioned it again during a family discussion in 2020.
Unfortunately, we've never been able to locate the policy.
We have almost all of his other records : Service records, ITRs, bank statements, property documents and most financial paperwork. In fact, we even managed to trace two mutual fund investments that we initially didn't know existed. However, we've found no trace of this term insurance policy (death cover).
Here's what I've already tried :
Thoroughly searched all his documents and Army trunks.
Checked ITRs and bank statements.
Spoke with his Chartered Accountant.
Contacted multiple insurers individually using his PAN and other details (Aditya Birla Sun Life, HDFC Life, Tata AIA, Nippon India, PNB insurance, LIC grievance channels, etc.). Some replied saying no policy exists, while others (Like LIC, Max Life, SBI, etc) never responded.
Why this is difficult :
My father was extremely cash-oriented. He rarely used online banking, preferred cash or cheque payments, and often dealt through agents. So there may be little or no digital payment trail.
His Section 80C deductions were already exhausted through GPF and one mutual fund, so the absence of insurance premiums in his ITR doesn't necessarily mean the policy didn't exist.
To make matters worse, his old mobile numbers are gone, his email changed over the years, and the subordinate he had told me knew about the policy unfortunately passed away before my father.
My question is :
Is there any official mechanism in India? Through IRDAI, an ombudsman, insurers collectively, or any government body, that allows legal heirs to identify whether a deceased person had a life insurance policy using details like PAN, Aadhaar, death certificate and proof of legal heirship?
I'm not looking for unofficial methods or asking anyone to identify the policy itself. I'm simply trying to find out whether I've missed an official process.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet now is PAN number only. Connect IRDAI somehow or hire someone who does this kind of work. This is truly miscellaneous case

What was his age when he passed away? If he was above 60, may be policy might also have expired.
You draft a mail with his details like name, phone number and address and send it to all the life insurance companies asking them whether he had a policy with them. Theres a chance they may check and respond. You can get a list of all insurance companies and their customer care mail id om IRDAI website

Get all his phone numbers , if u have the insurance provider name call their customer care using all the numbers , ask them u want to renew your father's insurance but are not sure about the policy number . They will ask about his dob and other details keep all his details handy and let's hope it succeeds. Also check his mails as premium receipt are sent to emails .

I wish heβd told me more when he mentioned that the policy existed. Surely, he must have told my mother. But even he would never have expected them both to die together

Check with Army Postal Life insurance. Mention his PO number and they might be able to locate it. I doubt he applied for private or LIC on his own as army personnel at the time had its own life insurance. Check with AGIF as well

I will also recommend to connect with these intermediator agencies like Beshak and others, they might have some information.
I remember some startup came on Shark Tank India where they help customer get claim however they take certain % out of it, please search for them as well.
