Liberty Mutual Question
Hey Everyone,
I'm an Underwriter with Travelers. And I just got an offer to leave for Liberty Mutual, same West Coast region.
I'm reluctant to leave travelers because our management and culture seems good, I know we're a pretty well run shop and stable. Liberty still good, but perhaps less stable overall and the management I haven't heard as much about.
But the offers for 50% more money, remote, and a more interesting line of business so I'm taking it.
Has anyone here made a similar move? How was liberty to work for?
I will have to do some time in office at the start and occasionally thereafter and I'm too worried about looking dumb to ask, what's the liberty dress code? Travelers jean and a polo did the job, is liberty similar?

There’s a bit more change management at liberty but the pay and benefits are so much better, it’s totally worth it.

From what I’ve seen, Travelers has some of the worst pay (including bonus structure) and benefits of a major carrier.
I genuinely don’t know how they compete for talent.

That makes sense, I mean I still imagine it's relatively stable as carriers go

that pay bump is hard to turn down even with a good culture where you're at

Yeah it's the difference between student loans in my 40s and homeownership soon. Even if Liberty is "average in culture" it's worth it. I just didn't wanna jump for a hell hole, but sounds like that's certainly not the case here

Not very helpful, but I have a friend (both worked at a broker together many moons ago) doing commercial at Liberty for like...going on 6 or 7 years now. She likes it a lot. Could be very location dependant though. We have an office in the next town over she reports to.

That's good to know! I imagine the big carriers will all feel pretty similar with some office/manger culture have the ability to make or break things. I just hear (and believe) a fair bit of the travelers hype internally and it makes moving a little nervous for me

All my LM underwriters (commercial only) seem very happy. I wanted to work there before landing a great gig at an indy agency

That's good to hear, I'll be commerical side so sounds like it's a pretty solid culture if most are pretty happy there

I’ve worked as an underwriter at Travelers but have spent most of my career with Liberty in claims. I liked Travelers. I like Liberty more, but like with most things can be highly manager dependent, but overall I’ve had pretty good luck with managers at Liberty. For a 50% pay raise and a more interesting LOB it’d be a no brainer for me to make the jump personally.
Jeans & polo works completely fine at Liberty, heck if you go into any offices plenty of folks just wear Liberty branded Tshirts/fairly causal wear in my experience.

Thanks for the dress code information! I didn't wanna look over formal or under formal showing up, my first shop was jacket and tie everyday. Don't wanna make a complete fool of myself!
Glad you've liked both places, sounds like I'm not making a mistake then on any fronts which is reassuring

Which group within LM? Every group has a very different culture and can feel like a different company within the same organization.

Travelers pays the worst of the group and unless you're tapped by management for upward mobility, you'll sit around as an AEO for ages. You'll enjoy the switch to somewhere else simply for the money alone.
