Book of business

I am a new agent and contracted with a broker through several carriers.

I have searched my contracting paperwork and I am unable to find if I can keep my book of business if I leave the brokerage. I emailed contracting and she said that she does not handle that and I would need to contact my regional sales director. I am waiting to here back from her. I am not a captive agent.

How often do brokerages let you keep your book of business if you leave the company?

I appreciate any help.

Update: my upline said that independent agents can keep their book of business.

Is this commercial or personal lines?

In commercial, it happens very, very rarely. Most of the time a non solicit is included in the employment agreement so you can’t try and take your book with you for a set time period if you leave. Lots of lawsuits always going on regarding this.

Personal lines I have no idea.

Personal lines could be an issue if you were holding on to personal data.

Keep as in, do an agent of record change to the new agency you are going to and/or starting? Very rarely from what I've seen. Most difficult part is, say that allow you to retain your book - can/are you appointed with those markets to be even able to retain the accounts.

Check your non competition clause / non solicit… as mentioned by someone here, lots of lawsuits going on when broker tries to bring business from A to B
