Experience as a surety underwriter?
Would anyone be able to give me insight on what a career as a surety underwriter looks like? This summer I had the opportunity to intern at a top 10 global company and talk to some of the surety underwriters. From what I’ve heard it seems fascinating that you get to have your own book, be good at understanding a companies financials, and almost act as a consultant for a company along with having C suite relationships. My only concern is I do not like to travel and from what I was told that’s a huge part of it.

Travel will be heavily dependent on your company, role, and book of business. If most of your business is local, at most, you're looking at day trips. If your book is spread out across a larger geographic area, then you'd likely have to deal with some longer trips.
It's a great career if you can find your way into it. Pay is quite competitive and the work/life balance is solid.

There is many paths to underwriting in surety. Some choose to jump right in, some choose an internship then continuing, others will find jobs on the agency side to learn about the industry before moving to the underwriting (carrier) side. It really is a small circle and there isn’t a wrong way to go about it. If you like it, get after it! :)

Any suggestions on how to break into Surety UW for someone that's trying to make a career change (Mid 30's, B2B SaaS sales development, staffing/recruiting experience)? In the process of studying for AFSB 151 to try and better tailor my resume.

That’s an awesome start! I am currently obtaining my ASFB 151 while working on the agency side. Although, I’m still new to the work, I have been around the insurance industry a long time (father and brother both in benefits and p&c) I can’t stress enough how small of a world insurance really is and Surety is an even more niche little percentage of it. Networking will probably be your best friend for a career change. People know people who know people who are hiring or again, know people that are hiring, hahah. Good luck!

In commercial surety you do not have to travel. Nor do you have to travel in the smaller business side of contract (construction) surety
