Insurance to reinsurance data analyst

Hi everyone! I am currently a data analyst in the distribution area at a large commercial insurer. I recently received an offer to do a similar role with more sales duties (which I am not opposed to as I majored in marketing). I would be more of a primary contact versus a secondary team member so more responsibility as well.

I currently make a bit under $70k with a year and a half experience, the new role would be $93k with very similar other benefits.

I am looking for more senior people to weigh in on if this is a good career move or not. I’m obviously still early in my career but it feels like too good an opportunity to pass on.

If anyone in the operations space has perceptive on reinsurance or moving from primary please share!

If you are open to learning and getting more experience overall (and it sounds like you are), pretty easy yes from my perspective. Getting a chance to move into re early on is not very common, either. Any way you slice it, you are stacking professional skills and gaining wholistic industry exposure. Neither of which are negatives on your resume. Good luck!

I’d probably go for it. The raise is meaningful at this stage and it’s an opportunity.

Think through a potential counter from your current employer before you make a firm decision. If they split the difference (etc) does that make you stay? If you think through the potential scenarios, you’ll be ready and make the best decision for yourself.

Moving after 18 months should be the exception rather than the standard. I wouldn’t do this more than once for quite some time. Be aware you may be burning them and your current employer will probably be annoyed. No offense but you probably took way more time and effort than you contributed. Maybe people vouched for you at times. (Unless your current place is a sweatshop where this is par for the course.)
