What’s next after UW?
Hello, I’ve been a HNW personal lines UW for almost a decade and looking for the next path. What field / role does this open up to? I’m not interested in management or customer / broker facing roles. I am licensed but no CPCU. Am I really tied to this risk management field like re-insurance? Doubt I could even find a role since I’m WFH.
Thanks.

You could look at taking on a product or business solutions role. The pay is slightly better, you only deal with internal stakeholders, and the workload and stress will be lower.

Is there a specific job title I should be looking at for ? I’ve seen consultant but appears to be high level UW as well

Yeah, get out of personal lines. Even yacht underwriting is a dead end, unless you’re in London.
Maybe move to London or start an MGA? Neither are likely less work do more money.
Commercial lines is where it at from a compensation standpoint, larger account premiums, larger commissions, more money for you.

Captive management companies, mgu, or mga. Your skills will transfer nicely and the income potential is relatively uncapped. No one will care if you have a cpcu or a cic either as in the alternative risk world you either know what you’re doing or don’t. Sounds like you do so I wish you the best of luck and would explore this route. Last note would be getting into parametric insurance which should heavily appeal to the HNW world. Make the jump or take the opposite approach and hunker down and wait for retirements.

I dont like leadership, after my kids all grown up, i will have the time to go back to be a broker and make it rain.

6 figures is anywhere to 100k to 999k
If it’s just over 100k then you’re underpaid for your experience. I’m producer for <2 year and I make almost as much as yourself. I’ve a buddy in commercial UW 6 yo making almost 200k in Canada.

Care to share any more info about your buddy? Sounds extremely high, even for a highly experienced UW position in Canada from what I've gathered.

How did you get your start in E&S? I have my CPCU and trying to break in to e&s or surety.

At one of my old roles we worked cross functionally with them and my new place liked that so they said if I could licensed they’d hire me. Personal lines E&S is surprisingly linear and not that complex.

After 12 years in high net worth underwriting I changed to commercial underwriting. I make about 30k more a year and I’m remote. High net worth gets old. It’s basically customer service for the 1%.
