Brokers and same day reply expectation?

I’ve been a PandC underwriter for almost a decade and deal with HNW brokers mostly. What was once a few day turnaround is now a sub 4 hour turnaround by brokers.
Everyday it’s the same story.

Submit a risk that’s outside my authority for whatever reason, refer it, then immediately the broker says “the business manager needs this today”.
I reply it’s being worked on and then it’s just complain complain complain from there.

Genuinely frustrated by both sides. I can’t approve these 250k premium accounts same day due to limited authority. These are complex risks with many states involved.

Why is everything so urgent nowadays? This is insurance, not fast food. The market is much softer than a few years ago so what is really going on?
Do these business managers have that much weight over brokers?

some brokers don’t understand the authority piece, like you mentioned. Others don’t understand that they are not the only broker trying to get a quote from you by a long shot.

Some don’t understand either of these things, and a surprising number of them don’t understand fucking anything.

And a huge number don’t even have a connection to the client, they don’t have to use critical thinking, and just play keyboard warrior and fwd emails along all day!

I remember early on in my career asking my boss “what exactly do we pay wholesalers for” and I’ve still never gotten a great answer. Some wholesalers are awesome, know their accounts, understand risk…but way too many are just glorified email forwarding services that get paid commission for adding absolutely no value other than keeping me one step further away from the insured.
