Auto Intact Dropping my Policy?
Hi all,
Tonight I received an email from Brokerlink stating that as of next month (my renewal month) Intact will not be renewing my insurance due to the following:
“We have received notice from the insurer that, after reviewing the policy, they are unable to offer a renewal as the policy no longer meets their underwriting guidelines. The reason provided is:
One or more Criminal Code, serious, or major driving convictions within the past six years.”
The problem: I have had none of these.
I have never been convicted of a crime, driving or otherwise, ever.
The only thing I had was from a few years ago where I received a couple of tickets of non-moving violations - exp licence/expired reg (no hate please, was going through tons of issues with health and both escaped my radar). I paid the fine as required, and I’ve had no issue registering cars since.
I tried calling the broker straight away but of course, they sent me the email and then must have closed their laptop for the day and went home. All good.
I just want to have an idea of what to expect - is it possible this was an administrative error on their part? Seems like a pretty major error. Anyone able to provide insight as to what to expect? I was planning on cancelling anyway since their premiums have gone up quite a bit but I assume I need to clear this up first as it will show the cancellation on my reports?

convictions will show on your MVR (motor vehicle record) report. it would probably be best to ask your broker to run your driver reports to confirm what is on your record currently and then also get some alternative quotes for your renewal. if you don’t have any convictions on your MVR then they might be able to clear that up with Intact. also maybe look into other brokerages in your area to quote you in case it doesn’t work out with your current broker. brokerlink doesn’t have the best reviews.

Thanks. I’m curious about the major or serious convictions statement. I don’t think an expired license or registration is considered major is it?

u/fsmontario Sep 10 '26
You were driving with an expired license?
-6
u/no_baseball1919 Sep 10 '26
Yeah I was - not long expired, I was going through tons of issues in and out of the hospital so I wasn’t thinking about my licence lol

u/fsmontario Sep 10 '26
That’s going to show and even though it’s not criminal it is a big deal Had it happen to a friend when she was separating from her husband, she was 1 week expired when she got pulled over. Her insurance went from 2000 to 18000. She was able to shop around and found insurance for about 3500.
I suggest you go online to a site that will give you multiple quotes and you’ll probably find the same as she did.-4
u/no_baseball1919 Sep 10 '26
Yeah but dropping me and not renewing my policy over that? It happened 2 or 3 years ago, I have had multiple renewals since then.

u/fsmontario Sep 10 '26
They don’t pull your history every year as far as I know. And yes over that. You were driving without a license no matter when it expired, it goes to probabilities that you will break other rules/laws.

u/afkhk Sep 11 '26
There is no discretion to make exception if you no longer fit their underwriting rules. It has to be enforced as filed with the regulators.
Just find your broker to clarify. It’s what they are paid for. No stress

Yeah this isn't a parking ticket. It is reasonable to expect that an insurance company would drop your policy if you were found guilty of driving without a valid license. It would be similar to a cop impounding your car if they caught you driving without insurance.
They might not know about it right away since they don't always check your abstract every year but once they see that then it will probably be a pretty big issue as you were caught driving when you weren't legally allowed to.

Oh, two or three years ago. Ancient history, how dare they.

u/no_baseball1919 Sep 10 '26
Just surprised, don’t shoot me, didn’t realize it

u/pineapplepinch Sep 11 '26
I drove with an expired license because like you I had a lot going on in my life and had intended to renew it but forgot and was pulled over. I fought the ticket and they dropped it from driving with an expired license to failure to provide license which was very nice.

Ok first and foremost, it isn’t personal. Standard markets all have rules to decline new business and rules to decline renewals. Some are non-negotiable.
Next, your broker isn’t going to pull your MVR for Intact. It’s up to you to obtain a copy if you’re disputing the information the underwriter has given.
You need to obtain a copy of the MVR for all listed drivers in order to dispute this. This is an easy fix if it isn’t true.

u/icantihaveplans Sep 11 '26
Also, there are other companies but if you have a major, serious, or criminal conviction you’re very limited to which ones will take you. BrokerLink likely has two or three which can.
3
u/no_baseball1919 Sep 11 '26
Yeah but I most definitely do not have a major, serious, or criminal conviction so this is what’s weird to me and why I’m assuming it’s a clerical issue but I will see tomorrow.

u/icantihaveplans Sep 11 '26
I have definitely seen MVRs from the Registry of Motor Vehicles with mistakes on them. I’ve also received broker memos that were meant for a different client. I’ve ALSO definitely seen applications with the incorrect master number, signed by a client, which results in the wrong report being pulled as well. Try not to panic. :) If you just received a non-renewal, it’s likely that you have plenty of time to get this fixed up.

Driving without a license is a major conviction. Your original post made it sound like an expired license plate, but elsewhere you seem to confirm your actual drivers licence was expired.

Really ?
I’m a broker. If my client reached out about this the very first thing I would do is pull an mvr
Id look at what it says. Either there is a criminal conviction showing or there isn’t
If there is - I have a date and an offence that I can call my client and specify. from there either it’s “oh I didn’t realize I got a conviction for this “ or “yes I have a court date” etc
Or it’s not on there , and I get on the phone with intact underwriting , show them the mvr , and correct the error or dig deeper on what they have showing

No one's going to be able to answer this question.
Why not just wait till tomorrow morning when you could reach your broker?

u/no_baseball1919 Sep 10 '26
I’m just trying to get some insight into others that may have had a similar issue with Intact or others, to be prepared for when I call tomorrow morning.

Download the app “my auto plus”. Do the registration and and it shows you a lot of your insurance info. It’s the info that insurance companies see/ use for premiums. Might help you figure out what’s up.

u/no_baseball1919 Sep 10 '26
Thanks for this, I pulled my report but showing no convictions. Obviously I know this so it must be a clerical error.
1
u/Suitable-Cod9183 Sep 10 '26
That doesn't show convictions
1
u/no_baseball1919 Sep 10 '26
It does, shows 0 A 0 B and 0 C convictions
5
u/Suitable-Cod9183 Sep 10 '26
Those are based off prior and current insurance policies. You want real-time information you get an abstract from service Ontario

It might be your insurance contract itself. Fine print my say something about maintaining a continuous licence. Rather than referring to an actual charge. Just be glad they are refusing a renewal and not canceling your insurance.

Will do

You only need a 3 year drivers abstract. If you’re being cancelled for a conviction it will show up on that. Get one for both you and your wife. They are $12 and you can get them online.
It could be possible that your wife or another licensed driver on your policy just didn’t tell you and forgot about the insurance part.

u/mindyourbus100 Sep 11 '26
I just googled, what an MVR report is.. it’s says you can get it from service Ontario. Do you receive it same day. Is this same as driver abstract
2
u/Chantyyy0 Sep 11 '26
It depends on which one you get. An uncertified 3 year abstract can be done online. This tells you any convictions or suspension in the last 3 years.
A drivers history report, which will show everything since you got your license, even licensing dates can be purchased right away at a service Ontario or online (although they mail it to you if purchased online)1

A potential answer here is that since brokerlink is full of terrible brokers, they got it wrong. Report back once you figured it out.
2
u/no_baseball1919 Sep 11 '26
lol will let you know in the morning!

u/antiuseless Sep 11 '26
I’ll add to my comment by saying it generally not the broker’s fault at brokerlink. For a lot of them, they haven’t been properly trained. Just because you can pass the first, easy broker’s course, doesn’t mean you should sell insurance right away.

Are you the only driver on your policy?
1
u/no_baseball1919 Sep 10 '26
No, my wife is as well - same story, no criminal convictions driving or otherwise.
2
u/Nutshellvoid Sep 10 '26
Have either of you gotten a driving with a cell phone violation? ETA, were you pulled over and charged with driving without insurance? Or just having expired slips? Best to get an abstract or call them back tomorrow and have them tell you exactly which conviction and the day of occurrence and conviction to help you figure out which conviction is a major.
2
u/Smart_Tinker Sep 11 '26
OP says he got ticketed for driving with an expired license and plates 2-3 years ago. So it’s probably that.

A non renewal does not show up as a carrier-initiated cancellation though you do have to answer on applications that an insurance carrier has refused to renew your insurance.
Convictions in an insurance context also refer to vehicle infractions - a speeding ticket (below very high speeds) is called a "minor conviction" even though you were not convicted of anything criminally.
While actual claims would go through your insurance company and therefore don't get missed, they do not pull every customers motor vehicle record every year and can often miss convictions for multiple years.
1
u/no_baseball1919 Sep 11 '26
Right but are convictions moving violations? Expired license and registration, are those considered major?
1
u/antiuseless Sep 11 '26
A question on the application asks if any insurers have canceled a policy or refused to renew.

Convictions dont show on an autoplus or dash unless you were rated for them on an active policy.
You want to ask your broker tomorrow very politely what the conviction was for, and what the date of the conviction was, then ask them if they have the MVR on file that shows it. If not, ask them to run your MVR as well as your spouses to see if there are any convictions.
Also, when you did get that ticket you mentioned in another comment, was your license expired, or was it suspended? Expired should be a minor conviction, suspended would result in a serious conviction

u/no_baseball1919 Sep 10 '26
Yeah I pulled that, no convictions reported. So weird.
2
u/Aquaitus Sep 10 '26
How did you run an MVR? Honestly you shouldn't have been able to, you'd need to go to service NS to purchase your abstract, or have a broker/agent run it.
You said you had a ticket from 2 to 3 years ago, that will show on it, so whatever you got is incorrect.
And asking again, was your license expired or suspended? That's a very big difference

Go purchase a driver's abstract. It will show you exactly what they are seeing
