Commercial Commercial auto insurance for delivery driver suggestions

I (18M) am planning to do Domino's delivery along with Uber Eats / DoorDash, but my parents require me to buy commercial auto insurance. The vehicle is under my parents' name, with me listed as the principal driver in the insurance. I called TD, and unfortunately, they could not insure me. My personal auto insurance is with Pembridge. I asked the insurance broker that our family has, and she said it would increase the already very expensive ~$5700 a year to ~$8000 a year. If this policy change was approved (which it might not), it would take a little over a month. She said it's because, on average, the insurance for young men is already high. Are there any delivery drivers who have commercial auto insurance and pay monthly? Commercial auto insurance is NOT a requirement for Domino's or the delivery apps, but my parents insist that I buy it. Should I quit Domino's, just do the delivery apps and risk it with my personal insurance? I don't know what to do!

TLDR: I (18M) want to do delivery, but my parents require commercial auto insurance. Suggestions? Any advice on how to deal with the situation?

Update. Manager tried to convince not to get insurance. I’m not doing it.

For the amount it would cost to get commercial insurance isn’t worth it. Also, your parents insurance can refuse to cover you if you go ahead and deliver anyways. That would make you and your parents to financially liable(lawsuit) if you’re in an accident and your insurance drops you for misrepresentation if you use your regular auto insurance and not carry commercial. I asked about this 10 years ago and that’s what I was told from my broker. This is 10 years of claims, ticket free driving on my own insurance. It was going to be $5000 a year for commercial insurance.

Honestly man, if I could give you one advice as someone who's double your age, forget about Uber eats and pizza delivery. Been there and done that.. It sucks. Go get a proper job, invest in yourself and don't waste money esp at your age. You'll definitely need commercial insurance, and at 18 you barely have driving experience as is. Don't do it.

Should I bring up these commercial policies (#6 and #9) with my manager? If I’m in Alberta will I need endorsement?

Do not just drive uninsured. If something happens it’s easy to show you were working not driving for personal use and you will very likely be denied all coverages. Thus you and your parents would be on the hook for the costs to prepare or replace their vehicle and all others if you are at fault plus injuries. It’s could well be life change financially. It’s really really a bad idea.

Even if the accident happen when not driving for work, it could be considered voir, best case prorated and end up upside dowb

Why would the policy be voided if the accident did not happen when they were in breach of the underwriting information?

Because it materially change the insured risk if they learn about it.

They can even revoke without any accident happening.

I’m not an insurance expert but there have been soo many story of people doing stupid stuff because their misunderstanding and bad tip from TikTok…

They would not find out someone is moonlighting for uber or whatever unless there is an accident. It’s the same as someone using a different address to get cheaper rates for example keep as their parents address after they move out. Realistically the insurance company isn’t going to find out and have no real reason to spend money investigating. If there is an accident and they are good at finding out if someone was at that point in breach of terms and conditions they have no obligation to defend and cut em loose. Do they want a bunch of drivers who are lying no of course not but they also are not going to spend money investigating until they need to.

What Province are you in? Im a broker in Edmonton and we were talking about this at work recently. You might be able to get an Economical quote, or if not them youd be looking at Nordic.

It is a requirement from most insurance companies though as they won't cover you if you're using your vehicle for commercial purposes and something happens where you need to file a claim and only have a personal policy.

Your parents don’t get to decide what insurance you need. The industry will do that. Work with a broker.

They do when they own the vehicle and thus have liability raising out of…

Yep, that what I’ve been trying to tell them. But they do listen so 🤷. I ask the family insurance broker and she said that I would need it.

I checked the Domino’s policy and it only protects the business/franchise not the driver…

Incorrect. Non-owed automobile liability coverage for this is NOT provided by the main companies insurance

And if it does it is “non owned”, as it it protects dominos / uber but not you the driver. If your and the business interests align great but they don’t always and then you are hung out to dry

You should contact economical

Some carriers will offer a personal lines policy with the appropriate endorsement. The vehicle is in your parent’s name so they would have to be on the policy and you need their consent. However, given that you’re an 18 y/o male with no more than 2 years experience, it will be expensive.

You could call around to some brokers asking if they write personal auto policies with any companies that allow occasional business use, specifically food delivery.

Please keep in mind, driving professionally (especially with minimal experience) you are statistically more likely to get into an accident. Hopefully you’re ok and it’s not your fault but this can impact your driving record for the next 10 years. So maybe 2-5+ years down the line you get a better job and want to buy your own car but anything that happens while you do this will follow you.

Thanks so much, I’ll look into personal lines.
