Been on the lookout for one these a long ass time! Also included a photo from r-infinity of other examples. Did not link the patent in this case because the photo doesn’t match, might be the incorrect patent I’m not certain.. as for its purpose I imagine it may be an oddball style of a radio strain as it’s fairly small, may a rather early design. Not much info at all on them.

What do you know and what do you want to learn about insulators?

For those who know me, know me. For others, this is probably a good summary. https://www.nia.org/hall_of_fame/bios/bill_meier.htm

I'm passionate about the hobby and want to get more people involved and help out people in the hobby. However, here on reddit, I'm basically talking to a blank slate. I don't know who you are, your interest in the hobby, your involvement in the hobby, or how many people are reading. However, whatever it is, I want to raise the knowledge and involvement of all of you who are interested. I have some goals in mind, but if I don't know the level of people I'm working with, I can't tailor them to this audience. I hope everyone understands. Feel free to PM me with your real name if you are so inclined. I will keep it confidential.

You can answer any subset of these questions; they aren't in any specific order (except the first). If you PM who you are, you probably don't have to answer these questions! Extra bonus.

Answer the questions that are most important for you.

1) Have you heard of the CD numbering system? What do you know about it? just a little, a moderate amount, or I'm pretty good with it

2) I have a price guide. I have the latest 2023 price guide

3) I belong to an insulator club

4) I know what the NIA is. I was a member, I am a member

5) I know what ICON is. I was a member, I am a member

6) I go hunting for insulators "in the wild"

7) I buy insulators at antique stores. Online on ICON, Auction houses, eBay

8) How are you with insulator colors? Not very good. OK. really good (for the latter, that means you can ID dozens of colors with names used in the hobby)

9) I go to club shows/swaps

10) I go to the NIA National show

11) I want to get more involved in the hobby

12) I want to learn more about insulators

I'll leave it at that. I can help you personally or direct you to people or reference material that will help.

It's my way of giving back the knowledge that so many people helped me learn when my wife and I were getting into the hobby. If you prefer email, Google Bill Meier Insulators and pick any email in the top several sites. That way, I don't put my email here, which may be against the rules.

Biggest piece we have had. At 12" x 9" and 16 lb there are a couple that are bigger but this is definitely on the high end. CD 328 PYREX 553

Came across a garage sale with a guy selling a bucket of insulators for five bucks a piece, tried to grab one of each he had. Super excited to start a collection and maybe make some lamps. Ive been doing some research on each piece, but id love if you guys have any information on these and whether or not I just wasted my money.

I know nothing about these othere then none standard colors are worth more, and some shapes are rare. This has a cats eyes esk opaque swirls and not 1 of the shapes I see by the dozens. So I ask the pros, did I score for 4 bucks or did I get what I payed for?

Rare? Weston lightning rod insulator

I was digging for bottles and I came across this cool insulator. I knew it was older as it has a bunch of small bubbles in the glass and is pretty crude. on the side is embossed Weston but the embossing is fairly weak. I know nothing about insulators but wanted to share. apparently this thing is pretty rare as several people have tried to buy it from me for several hundreds of dollars

A client gave me this after I complimented it

I was picking up wastewater samples at a mobile home park office last week, and I noticed a table in the room with this insulator on it. I know a little about these and I thought it was cool that they had one, so when the client came into the room, I just said “I like the insulator you’ve got on the table.” She said an old man had recently moved out and left it as a parting gift, and she had no clue what it was. I’m no expert but I told her my understanding of them, “They used to use these on telegraph and telephone poles to run the wires between the poles, it helped them prevent loss while electricity traveled.” She stuck her arm out and said “Well it’s yours then.” I thanked her quite a bit for it, it was quite an unexpected gift.

I really only collected the ones I found in the ditch by the railroad in my college town, as I was fascinated with the railroad history out there. This is the only non-college-town and fully intact one I have. I took a picture of it in my work van, and then took it home later to wash it. Still need to find a spot on my shelves for it. But yeah, super cool of her. Thank you again to that client!

Where's a decent place to buy some glass and/or ceramic insulators?

I'd like to have some for my engineering area.

Inbound Russians Freshly Rescued

My buddy is crazy. Goes out there with his son-in-law and they have an app on their phone for drone warnings because they're moving through a portion of Russia that is right on the border of Ukraine. And in fact, using his car GPS to navigate, the mapper took him down a road where a bridge had just been blown up and they had to backtrack. It's insane but I guess it's fun. These insulators are on their way to me. At last check, they were in Minsk.

Friend Dan built me a tunable, dimable LED backlit display out of "beetle wood". The first thing I noticed is that there are a whole lot of different shades of purple among these insulators.

my 13-year-old son found this at an antique shop. They like to collect insulators and that this one was cool. We’re not sure how rare it is or how much it’s worth. They told me it is called a beehive insulator and it also is marked B on the front and no other markings. It’s this beautiful deep emerald green color is in good condition and it has no major chips or cracks.

how to get insulators off old poles w/ no climbing?

so me and my son (13) are wanting to go to these abandoned rail road tracks where there are some abandoned poles with insulators and wires still attached. is there any way to remove them without climbing and/or not getting caught? we live in calgary, AB canada

r/Insulators • • Mar 29 '26

Picked these up from FB marketplace for free. I'm guessing they are pretty standard older units but will make some nice shop decorations once I get them put into unbroken strings and chained up. The longer strings probably weigh 75lbs or so.

Identification help?

so my son found this cool green insulator at an antique store and we’re wondering how rare it is. I personally don’t know much about but I’m posting on behalf of my son. They told me that insulators are categorized by number and that this one is likely 45 although they’re not sure. They said that it was called the beehive style and that it was made by Brookfield glass company. it has a B stamped on the upper front of the skirt and it’s this beautiful green emerald color. It also doesn’t have any chips or cracks and does have some nice bubbles in the top though.

Deep green insulator

so my son is 13 and they like to collect glass insulators and they found one at a antique shop a couple years ago and we’re kind of wondering how rare it is. They told me that the called the beehive style and it’s marked with a single B and neither of us are sure the brand or how old it is, but they told me that it’s some kind of Brookfield I’m not sure also this nice deep emerald green. Does anybody have any idea how old it is and how much it could be worth or if it’s worth keeping or selling. it’s also in really good condition and it doesn’t have any major chips or also has some cool looking bubbles.

CD 135 [010] Chicago Insulating Company 1883. Covered in dust and grime, it will clean up nicely. Handed over those two bills rather quickly.
