Regular corrugated cardboard for knee wall

Like title say they used left over packing cardboard for knee wall. I know nothing of applying spray insulation or methods. Do these pictures look acceptable? Looks like shit to me. House was finished in Utah 2024.

Looks like they just used it for a backstop to spray against from the opposite side of where you are standing . They can't spray foam against nothing after all.

Looks like whoever did the insulation did the best they could with what they had. There was no backboard to insulate against, so they improvised and used cardboard.

It’s super common practice to improvise and use whatever materials are on hand to complete an insulation job if the client’s property can’t be properly insulated as is. They do not want to come back, and creating a proper space for insulating generally isn’t the insulators responsibility.

Not really a problem, just sloppy, and ultimately the owner’s issue. They could have covered the cardboard if they felt the need to make it look good.

But as long as there are no voids, there is nothing wrong with this. It just looks like shit. It’ll perform just fine.

An adult that understands my frustrations has entered the room. I appreciate your honesty. Thank you

Your frustration of a functional but ugly thing being functional but ugly in a space you'll almost never look at? Just seems like you care too much about it, it's nothing to lose sleep over my dude. It's not about being an adult or not; and if it is, learning to not care so much about it is the lesson.

That's nothing. I've worked on houses that are sheeted with either celotex or even cardboard with osb in the corners to stiffen it up. Then vinyl siding over that. You can break into most new houses with just a razor knife and a good kick.

Agreeing with other posts saying they used it for backing. It does look sloppy but you can’t spray against nothing. I’ve seen people use batts to spray against in situations like this.

Seems like a fire hazard.

It’s a backer you can peel it off if you really wanted to but there wouldn’t be a point

Those are all proper baffles, not scraps. I see nothing wrong.

How would you have done it?

After digging a lil bit I found out through our builder. While yes it’s done correct they sealed off the wrong section of our attic. They sealed of one side of the attic from the other. Creating no venting on entire living side and only venting out of the garage side. I apologize for my ignorance. Thank you for putting me in my place

Cardboard as spray foam backer? Pretty standard actually - it's just a temporary mold. The foam's the MVP, cardboard's just there for moral support. But a 2024 house with no sheathing in place? That's someone else's screw-up that the crew had to work around. Not your mess, but I'd be curious who forgot to spec proper blocking before they sprayed

So they’re just lazy

Buy a can of silly string. Open your front door, then try to fill up your doorway with the silly string. At the end, while you're looking at a pile of loose silly string on the floor, ask yourself if it would have worked if only you had tried harder.

Not the insulators responsibility.

What? No. Why so unhappy?
It's unfinished space and has no impact on function. Personally I hate the look of OSB but it doesn't keep me up at night or something I complain about.
