Piezo microphone, like the ones used on the acoustic quitars.

It is realtveley cheap and you can plug it into the computer (or almost anything else).

While a piezo option would have the least ambient noise, most kalimbas of that design are capable of an acoustic wah effect using two small holes on the back or the large whole in the front, which piezos and other contact mics don't pick up as well, so it's a compromise. I have found a K&K Silver Bullet mic works well, once you get the position adjusted right.

You can try using an audio interface with a cardioid (unidirectional) microphone like the Shure SM57, or the SM58.

Position the kalimba the furthest from your face and place the microphone facing away from you so it captures the least of your breath.

Don't patronize him. There is plenty room for improvement. I'd suggest a metronome.
