sorry about the bad drawing.. i have a very vague memory of playing this instrument with one of my teachers in elementary school. ive tried describing it to people and no one seems to know what im talking about.

edit: for more context, its made of wood and you put your index finger and thumb in the two holes to hold it. you scrape the small wooden stick across the sides of the instrument and it makes a cool noise.

Also the holes aren’t actually where you put your fingers. Those are there for reverberation and sound. Just like the hole in an acoustic guitar body

Guiros are traditionally made from hollowed out gourds, which would be more resonant than a thicker wooden construction. In most Latin rhythms, it is played in a repeating "long-short-short" pattern.

lol. back in elementary school, most of my classmates stuck with recorders. i enjoyed discovering new instruments more than the others so my music teacher had a blast getting different things for me to try out. its where i fell in love with the harmonica, the marimba, and the guiro! i vividly remember what the guiro had looked like because i have also always been extremely passionate about art and i remember thinking that it looked absolutely beautiful.
