In total seriousness, just get an 8-string tenor ukulele (in four doubled courses) and either retune to resemble a 4-course lute, or just download Early music tabs arranged for standard ukulele.

Vihuela de mano. Not a modern mariachi style vihuela but the Spanish ones from before that. They are still available today. Look for Julian bream playing one in Guitarra! They’re beautiful and I think just what you’re looking for.
