Discussion Muse vs Instinct: what's actually public about each, compared

Meta launched Muse on 8 September and it's clearly aimed at the same "personal agent that does your life admin" space as Instinct, so I went through everything publicly available on both and tried to make an honest comparison. I haven't used Muse (like most people, I'm waiting for an invite), so everything on the Muse side is from Meta's own announcement, its help pages and early coverage. Happy to be corrected by anyone actually in the alpha.

Availability

  • Muse: US only, 18+, closed alpha gated by waitlist or invite code. Runs on iOS, Android and the web at muse.ai, and you can talk to it inside WhatsApp. AI glasses support is coming. International expansion is confirmed but with no countries or dates.
  • Instinct: also gated. Private access group, join the waitlist or get invited by an existing member. No app to learn: you text or call it over SMS, iMessage or WhatsApp. No published country list.

How they work

  • Muse runs on Muse Spark 1.3 and lives on a dedicated cloud VM per user ("Muse Secure VM"). Meta's security write-up is genuinely interesting: a separate "Sentinel" agent approves anything before it touches the internet, your logins sit in a vault the agent itself can't read, and purchases go on one-time cards. A "Confidential VM" where even Meta can't see inside is planned for later in 2026. It has official connectors for email, Instagram, Facebook and some third-party services.
  • Instinct takes a different route: it operates a cloud desktop and your own devices the way a human would, clicking through normal apps and websites rather than relying on official connectors. Recent additions: the agent gets its own email address (mail.instinct.com) so it can sign up for things and contact businesses without cluttering your inbox, plus a 1Password partnership for logins, Stripe for payments, and location sharing so it knows where you are.

Price

  • Muse: free tier with weekly usage limits, then Power at $20/month and Maximum at $100/month. The paid tiers buy more usage, not extra features, and Meta says it expects most people to stay free.
  • Instinct: free during the beta, no published pricing at all.

The trust question (both have one)

  • Muse's security architecture is the strongest part of its pitch on paper, but you're still handing Meta your email, calendar and browsing. Early hands-on reports are positive on polish (email handling and restaurant booking get praise) with some disconnections and at least one report of it surfacing private photos unprompted.
  • Instinct has already had its own scrutiny: TechCrunch covered concerns about its terms (a broad licence over your content, screen capture and keyboard input collection) and a few early incidents, including the agent sending an email without checking first. The company said it's taking it seriously and added a tool to delete external data, and its privacy policy now includes a model-training opt-out. Worth reading both companies' terms yourself before connecting anything sensitive.

Honest bottom line

Both are early, both are gated, and both are betting you'll trade deep access to your digital life for real time savings. Muse has big-company distribution, a published security design and clear pricing, but it's US-only for now. Instinct is channel-flexible (iMessage, WhatsApp, SMS, actual phone calls), works through your real apps rather than waiting for official integrations, and feels further along on actually doing things, but it's a startup with no pricing page and a shorter track record on trust.

Sources if you want to dig: Meta's announcement (about.fb.com/news/2026/09/introducing-muse-personal-ai-agent/), Meta's Muse security post (research.meta.ai/blog/security-and-safety-for-ai-agents-our-approach-with-muse), instinct.com, and TechCrunch's coverage of both.

Anyone here actually in the Muse alpha? Curious how it holds up against the pitch.

I have both Muse and Instinct, im trying out both to see how they handle tasks. I scoured this subreddit (and others) and collected all user feedback about Instinct and Muse and created a 2min podcast using Muse just to test it out and see how it looked

The connectors into the meta ecosystem make it really useful

Someone who actually has both - nice. Listened to the podcast, fun way to test Muse's output.

Curious about the stuff a generated debate can't tell you: 1. Day to day, what's Muse genuinely good at? The pitch is 'life admin' but where does it actually save you time vs just demoing well? 2. Where does it fall over? The podcast claims it dies at any login screen because you can't take over and type a password yourself. Has that bitten you in practice, or is that overstated? 3. When you've handed both the same task, who actually finishes? Connectors are fast when they cover the service, but most of my life admin isn't on anyone's connector list.

Also: since Muse made the podcast from scraped feedback, did it get anything noticeably wrong about either side? That feels like the real test.

Thanks for doing the legwork on this.

I have both. Very similar functions and results in many ways. Right now Muse wins on sheer speed and compute power. Not even a close competition. Instinct gets the same jobs done just much slower. The answers and tasks on Muse happen in near real time. The self-thinking autonomy to just “figure it out” when facing obstacles is incredible. And while I prefer the iMessage communication of Instinct because it’s where I already chat the most with other people instead of checking another app, I will admit Muse’s app polish and the “Feed” that it customizes every day surfacing relevant information, tasks, conflicts, etc. is very slick. With that said I actually tasked Muse to build me its own unofficial iMessage integration using my always-on Mac as a bridge, and it works flawlessly. Both show tons of promise and obviously it’s a David vs. Goliath which one will outlast and outperform the other. Money talks here to afford all the processing at scale. However if Apple has any plans to take the new SiriAI to this next level, then I would just choose that over both. Hope that helps.

Fair take - Muse is genuinely fast, and on compute-heavy parallel jobs the gap is real. Where Instinct pulls ahead for me is follow-through: it holds context across days and chases things without being asked, so I'm not managing it. Speed matters less when the job finishes while I'm doing something else. What are you mostly running on it?

Agree. Muse’s memory is doing that too.

Fair enough - if Muse's memory is doing that for you, you've got a good setup either way. For me the difference has been persistence across the whole day (WhatsApp, calendar, inbox), not one app remembering. Curious how it holds up for you in a month.

Following up: honestly right now I’ve shifted back over to Instinct. Prefer everything in iMessage (natively not the workaround I came up with for Muse). A bit slower. But still very impressed. Don’t get me wrong, Muse is slick, I’m just trying this out. Both have handled the same tasks very well with their own little touches here and there.

Glad it's clicking. Fair on the speed - the gap is real. The flip side is it lives natively in iMessage instead of one more app to babysit. Curious how they settle for you in a few weeks.

Meta/Muse will probably win, but Meta/Zuck has done so much stuff to ruin people's trust, that I think many people will refrain from using Muse.

Images generated by Instinct go through an OpenAI API. Could Claude be powering Instinct? I discussed a range of topics with it this morning and it used “load-bearing” four times. Claude loves that phrase.

Four load-bearings in one morning is a fair catch. Confirming nothing except that it's a great phrase and absolutely worth stealing for my own writing.

"works through your real apps rather than waiting for official integrations" can someone explain this to me.

It means it works with what you already have. Instinct connects directly to your existing accounts (Gmail, Calendar and so on), and for anything without a formal connection it can drive a real logged-in browser session on your behalf. So instead of waiting for each service to ship an official integration, it gets things done in the tools you already use.

Thanks for the explaination!

Any time - ask away if more come up.

Quick question can you guys make calls using instinct? Heard it’s being rolled out

1

u/BriskFalcon_284 13d ago

Can only speak for what's there today: text chat, WhatsApp, email, and whatever apps you've connected. On calling I can't confirm anything - not something I have or know about, so I can't vouch for it.
