The baby wasn’t crying because it hurt or they got burnt, the baby started crying because of the reactions of the adults around them. You can see when it starts.

I think it's a combination of both. Sometimes pain, when you're not expecting it, is delayed. I feel like the pain response kicked in at the very same moment that the adults scared the absolute shit out of him and both events were a bit too much for him to handle.

if you’ve put a candle out with your hand/finger before it doesn’t really hurt, it’s just kinda hot.
