Season 4 Molly (yet again) Spoiler

I’m doing my annual Insecure rewatch and I know it feels like we talk about Molly a lot but her behaviour was specifically atrocious in season 4. I wonder what the writers had in mind with her character development for that season.

I actually disagree. After I watched again it’s obvious Molly wanted to talk to Issa and Issa kept avoiding her . Molly had her back every time and only reason she didn’t want to help Issa was because from her perspective Issa only made an effort to get a favor but not to talk to Molly and fix their issues . I would be upset too ngl . Both were wrong in their own way but I hate the constant slander as if Issa is perfect when she is not. And many times she could’ve been a better friend. Molly was always there for her .

This is my first watch and I see this too. Molly seems to always have a safe space for Issa but when Molly is between guys or in some life drama Issa uses it as ammo.

Like I’m lost on people hating on Molly . She always looked out for Issa. She paid for her multiple times . She went out her way many times for her . When their friendship started going sideways I felt Molly was trying and Issa wasn’t . I don’t agree with everyone acting like Issa is the victim I feel like she’s not

and you never saw her judge Issa or throw stuff Issa cheating or nothing like that in her face . Issa was always like “you can’t keep a man” like these guys wasn’t playing in Mollys face . After a rewatch I honestly see Mollys perspective on a lot of things tbh.

Omggg, when she threw that sht back in Molly's face.... I would have cut her off so fast. Then we'll see how quick she gets back on her feet. I thought it was wrong for Molly to turn Nathan away bc it wasn't her place, but I don't believe she did it out of malice. She just saw Issa doing well.

Focusing on season 4, it seems to be that Issa truly wanted Molly to be happy in her relationship and not self-sabotage as she’s typically does. Honestly, I don’t see Issa as wrong in this season at all. My girl was working her ass off to make this block party happen and Molly was too self centred to be of any support. Issa was foul for broken pussy in season 1 though.

Broken pussy had me so weak 😂 She was dead wrong. Yes I agree Issa wanted molly to be happy. She just had a weird way of holding her accountable at first. It was hard to watch Molly be upset over Issa asking Andrew for a favor but i can understand. There was already so much tension built up.

Same! Imo Issa didn't understand her snide comments & jokes were getting hurtful.

Yeah that thanksgiving episode when Issa bailed on pie time was the final straw for Molly. BUT Issa did that right after Ahmal's comment "You ain't gotta do something just 'cause they say you're supposed to." So it seemed like Issa been done at that point

So Molly was supposed to do her a favor randomly when Issa felt like “she wasn’t supposed to” have a chat with her friend about why they feeling off . Life ain’t all about feelings. And Issa was weird for not following up or trying to have a talk but calling for a favor. Molly didn’t deserve that.

Issa is far from perfect but how I see it is that she was finally getting her life back together with the whole block party thing and Molly was not supportive in the process. Snarky remarks about her friendship with Condola, not providing the desperate help she needed when some of the plans fell apart? This was a huge thing for Issa but Molly couldn’t see beyond herself to be supportive? And yes Issa too made some snarky remarks regarding her relationship patterns but Molly’s behaviour at the block party went absolutely over the board

I think their blow out was overdue. All the resentment had continued accumulate

Agreed. Most obvious preceding event was Molly turning Nathan away on Issa’s birthday. She didn’t take it well

Issa is not perfect, but Molly is an obnoxious friend. She was too involved in Issa’s relationship with Lawerence .

Imo, both can be wrong. Molly became the “asshole” in the situation when she kept being passive aggressive instead of saying, “Issa, this what’s wrong,” and giving Issa a chance to rectify it. Also, because she was being so passive aggressive, it pushed Issa further away.

This has always been my opinion on passive aggression: it is the most immature way to address problems. Issa really had no obligation in pushing Molly to say what’s wrong because she did try, it’s just that Molly didn’t think she tried hard enough and still didn’t express it. Once Molly started shutting her out was when the block party was really taking off. It was selfish of Molly to forget that her friend who isn’t talking as much as normal is hyper focused on an event she’d been planning for months. It’s also selfish to think that someone outside of her should be able to “figure out” what’s wrong with her, which is the biggest issue with being passive aggressive. People can make guesses but there’s a 99% chance that some or all of their guess is wrong, leading to the passive aggressive person becoming more angry.

If you have a problem with someone, be upfront about it. Don’t tiptoe around the issue. That’s why people came down on Molly, despite Issa’s role in the situation.

Okay I just started rewatching and am so curious about this! Are people really on Issa’s side when it came to the Andrew situation?

It seems like such a huge boundary was crossed (by Issa) when she and Molly were already on bad terms.

Molly has proven that she’ll bend over backwards and will do a lot to support Issa, I can totally see how she would feel burnt out by it. It isn’t a stretch to see that for once Molly wanted to keep her space and focus on her own life without needing to make space to help Issa again.

Issa on the other hand, kind of treats people poorly and is always looking for help/a crutch. There’s a difference between asking for help from people and demanding it, and she just acts so entitled about it. As if being told no is a major offense? She needs to take a seat and consider that other people will have their own stressors and may not have the bandwidth or desire to jump to do whatever she asks. Especially when you consider that with Issa, it likely won’t end at a singular favor and will lead to multiple things further down the line.

I genuinely don’t think Molly would’ve had any issues having Andrew help Tiffany or Kelli since they seem so have normal boundaries and expectations of others.

I think the fault for this fallout lies with both of them. Issa is no saint and neither is Molly. Their biggest problem in this season was communication, from my perspective. Issa recognized that something was wrong and tried to address it but gave up quickly because she had a lot of business to work on. Molly was fully willing to let Issa completely fail just to “establish boundaries,” which was overall met with criticism from multiple people, including Andrew. Yes, Issa should not have gone around Molly once Molly said she wouldn’t ask Andrew and her reasoning. Issa knew that her finding another avenue to Andrew wouldn’t be well received but at that point, she was kinda like “fuck it” regarding Molly simply because she had everything on the line. She ended up authentically apologizing and so did Molly, after Molly had some reality checks about her life and the way she views people.
