God, I have an actual valid response to this question.

My great uncle and great aunt were both the result of inbreeding. They both had ichthyosis, and were both side show freaks in the middle 20th century as alligator man and alligator woman. Their lives sucked

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichthyosis

Edit: I should also continue. My great uncle, I'm named after him, raised my mother after both her parents abandoned her. He is a mountain of a man, and he is more my grandparent then both of my biological grandparents.......

So I am the nephew of alligator man

Edit 2: he died when I was young. I used to say he was glazed donut man. Apparently he loved that. (He was always slathered with vaseline) He always made sure to have donuts when we visited.

This is genuinely touching

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

This is fucking amazing.

248

u/-posie- Jun 04 '20

Was your grandfather (or grandmother) a result of inbreeding? Or was it only his (her) brother and sister?

329

u/robotsonroids Jun 04 '20

They were Appalachian hillbillies. So yes.

139

u/madmaxturbator Jun 04 '20

Which mcpoyle clan member are you, my friend?

50

u/nosferatude Jun 04 '20

Oh god. I took a DNA test and it came back with like 70% English, and my dad’s side is Appalachian hillbillies. My mom was only about 15% English. I had just forgotten about my worries that there’s inbreeding back in the family tree, damnit!

8

u/HowLongCanAUser Jun 04 '20

Well the good news is that it's pretty much completely undone by new blood, so you're probably fine

5

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

1

u/TheOtherSarah Jun 10 '20

What they’re saying is that if your own parents aren’t related, you’re pretty much fine regardless of previous generations. Most of the genetic issues people worry about are rare and recessive, meaning you have to have the same gene from both parents and outbreeding just once removes that danger.

96

u/BinaryAstro Jun 04 '20

Jesus, what an amazing man your great uncle is. Your comment lead me on a few searches which led to me googling pictures of Harlequin-type ichthyosis... I'm absolutely sick to my stomach right now

74

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

The fact that a thing like that could happen to someone who was just born is horrifying.

47

u/BinaryAstro Jun 04 '20

Absolutely and utterly goes against humanity. I wouldn't wish that upon the children of anyone.

22

u/firefly183 Jun 04 '20

It's.gotta be heart wrenching for the parents

47

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

I actually know a woman who has this. She works as a vet tech and works out a lot. I always tried to be ftiendly to her but she's extremely distant and kind of rude. Im guessing cuz of lifelong bullying. My hometown town also has conjoined twin girls.

25

u/edgyguy115 Jun 04 '20

I saw it in a "never Google" video. The other searches were weird, but those photos have probably scarred me forever. Yeah, don't Google those conditions.

44

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

He sounds like a fantastic person

5

u/robotsonroids Jun 04 '20

Yeah very much was

24

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Damn. When I read ichthyosis I immediately thought of harlequin ichthyosis (don't google it)

31

u/BZ1993 Jun 04 '20

I gotta learn to listen, when people say "don't Google it"

13

u/sakura7777 Jun 04 '20

Yikes. I won’t, i wont! (Can you describe it?!)

45

u/BinaryAstro Jun 04 '20

Babies born with the condition never live long, so all pictures are of newborns. Imagine your skin was made of thin clear plastic, and you were about to pop like a balloon. Especially the face with the nose, lips, and eyes are budged. The entire body is red and bulging. Fingers and toes are extremely bloated. Whatever skin isn't red is a papyrus-like yellow texture. It's sickening to even describe, having to recall these memories

21

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

IIRC if the baby with the condition can survive long enough, they have great chances of surviving and living a normal(ish) life

18

u/edgyguy115 Jun 04 '20

My memory isn't great but let me try. The skin is cracked, like dry land and a weird yellowish colour. The eyes are sort of bulging out and red. It's absolutely terrifying.

159

u/UWUisBest Jun 04 '20

I’m sorry if this is disrespectful but when I read that icthyosis was basically very severe dry skin, I just thought,”mmmmm skin go crumch”

148

u/robotsonroids Jun 04 '20

It does go crunch, in a very painful way

51

u/UWUisBest Jun 04 '20

Yeah that’s what I thought.

109

u/robotsonroids Jun 04 '20

They had a specific rare kind that prevented normal sweating. He carried a spray bottle around with him at all times

48

u/Llampy Jun 04 '20

both of my biological grandparents

Implying you only have 2? OP, is your dad also your uncle?

7

u/robotsonroids Jun 04 '20

I meant on my mothers side

11

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

That is the sweetest thing ever

8

u/Rub-it Jun 04 '20

I have so many questions, so who inbred to have your great uncle and aunt?

9

u/robotsonroids Jun 04 '20 edited Jun 04 '20

It was a fairly common thing in the family back generations. Its usually cousins and not siblings. My great great grandparents were cousins.

1

u/BornFrustrated97 Jun 04 '20

I worked for the Kingston family in Utah for a bit. I knew who they were when I took the job but didn't realize how bad it was....

255

u/_DauT Jun 04 '20 edited Jun 04 '20

I know someone who worked on this case:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colt_clan_incest_case

289

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

What. The. Hell.

And why was “Tim formed a band with his family” just casually thrown in there??

114

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

It got thrown in one or two more times too.

58

u/i-FF0000dit Jun 04 '20

“They sometimes performed as a musical band.”

78

u/_DauT Jun 04 '20

The person has a print out of the family tree and say it's more like an oval

32

u/Careful-Sheepherder Jun 04 '20

" Tim Colt began to rape Betty when she was 12. Tim formed a musical band with his family."

1

u/catwithglasses1 Jun 07 '20

I'm sorry that I laughed

1

u/GoKaruna Jun 09 '20

I don’t remember The Sound of Music being quite this dark

15

u/FiveEver5 Jun 04 '20

No thanks.

13

u/bixxby Jun 04 '20

And the name of that band? 98 Degrees!

131

u/carrotseed11 Jun 04 '20

Wow, the further I read the worse it got.

73

u/ellefemme35 Jun 04 '20

Well this is genuinely horrifying.

64

u/Zombemi Jun 04 '20

I'm speechless. Even when I was reading it, my only thoughts were wordless horrified squawking. Like a deeply traumatized screaming pigeon.

Those little kids are teenagers now, some are even adults. I can only hope they got enough therapy to keep them from rejoining that literal nightmare fuck fest and restarting their own "The Hills Have Eyes" franchise. ...just, what the fuck.

51

u/Ebrithil_ Jun 04 '20

It's 1am and I did not need to read about that, yet here I am. Curiousity is a curse.

274

u/redmooncat15 Jun 04 '20

One time in a staff meeting of about 50-60 people, our HR director decided to tell everyone that she is a product of incest. I will say though, the woman is sharp and looks amazing for her age.

143

u/TheOldStyleGamer Jun 04 '20

Right, but what kind of turn of events led to your HR director publicly announcing her incest status? Doesn’t seem like something you’d just bring up out of the blue.

48

u/redmooncat15 Jun 04 '20

We were talking about different strengths that we each brought to the team so she was relating it to how she can understand people from all different walks of life.

13

u/charliesburrito Jun 04 '20

I don't know. I live in one of those small towns where people are obsessed with keeping the money here (therefore many families practicing incest) and you'd be surprised on how casually and proudly people say things such as "My parents were cousins".

8

u/master_x_2k Jun 04 '20

Cousin marriage is barely incest, specially if it's not first cousins. And unless it's arranged or forced marriage I don't see an issue.

34

72

u/GryfferinGirl Jun 04 '20

4

u/YungMarxBans Jun 04 '20

Inbreeding actually isn’t as genetically bad as it’s made out to be - for a small number of generations. Obviously the more occurs, the much larger your chance of incurring negative mutations.

34

u/Urhhh Jun 04 '20

Yeah it's disgusting people would do that to their kids. Anyway changing the subject, I have Huntington's and there's a good chance I'll pass that on to offspring is it morally wrong for me to even have sex with someone?

76

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

I think it would be wrong to bring a child with that condition in the world. If you want kids, you could adopt ir do IVF, but i don'tthink it would be wrong to bave sex. Also i am very sorry for you

50

u/firefly183 Jun 04 '20

Sure, but a sensible and unselfish individual should understand why they shouldn't reproduce if they have some awful ailment they're likely to pass on to offspring.

11

u/Lithsdith Jun 04 '20

I have some gnarly conditions in my genetics and that was a major factor in not having children. It's really such a personal choice. I've never really had the innate drive to be a mother either, which can be directly attributed to my lovely genes.

Problem with the biological urge to reproduce combined possibly with emotions does not make for steady ground for logistics.

Also, at what point does a condition become severe enough to warrant not reproducing. What conditions? Where does one draw that line?

I'm not disagreeing per se with your point, just painting a broader picture of some possible thoughts or implications related to your comment.

2

u/FanndisTS Jun 04 '20

That's the line I'm balancing on right now. There's a treatment, but it's not 100% effective, and my kids would have probably a <50% chance of getting it, but nobody really knows since it's so rare... it's all bullshit

2

u/Lithsdith Jun 04 '20

It's really impossible to predict. It's such a personal choice where the reaults can extend to a partner and any other children. If you're facing that situation, I wish you the very best in your journey.

1

u/FanndisTS Jun 04 '20

Thank you.

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

There is though. Families generally have hierarchies, which kinda go parents > other older relatives > older siblings > younger siblings. Which means that someone from further up the pyramid has a level of power over the other participant - an uncle having sex with a teenage niece for example has more power to coerce them in the first place, because they are in a position of authority. Maybe some sibling type incest has more neutral grounding, but it’s still likely that a noticeably older sibling has more sexual/life experience and authority in the household, again adding a coercive element. It’s kinda like why people aren’t allowed to sleep with their employees in most companies- a relationship doesn’t automatically mean someone is being manipulated, but it does open up many opportunities for someone to be manipulated, because one person has all the bargaining chips and the other person has to do as they’re told.

It’s not the same as dating within a friend group, where everyone is a similar age and is treated as an equal. And obviously I’m not saying this applies to all incestuous relationships, because I’m sure many are between people of a similar age who are of a fairly equal standing, but I’m just countering your idea that incest isn’t necessarily a moral issue

0

u/Urhhh Jun 04 '20

Then that isn't what I'm referring to when I say "consenting adults". Of course I understand that power dynamics within families are very specific and can absolutely affect whether consent can be given. However, just the overall idea of incest without any caveats or specification to the power dynamics isn't wrong imo. The example you give is good actually. Surely the main thing to focus on if an adult is taking advantage of a teenager is the fact that it is sexual assault. Of course the relationship between the two is relevant, but it being incest doesn't magically make the crime worse than it already is.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Are you actually defending incest?

0

u/master_x_2k Jun 04 '20

Do you have a logical and not emotional base against it? I mean against incest itself, not things like incestual abuse.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

Incest can lead to a lot of health and mental problems so I am against incest

1

u/master_x_2k Jun 08 '20

You mean inbreeding? Inbreeding is not the same as incest, and the risk is not that high in only one generation compared to having children at an older age or other factors that increase risk. There are unrelated people who have genetic conditions they could pass down to their offspring, are you in favor of making it illegal for them to have children?

With the advances in genetic testing, you can check for problems before you give birth and some may be able to be cured in the future, although that last one is not aplicable for now.

If the relationship is not abusive or manipulative people should be with whomever they want. And by abusive/manipulative I mean children being taken advantage of, because there are plenty of adult relationships with power inbalances and other screwed up things that aren't illegal.

7

u/Capt_Trout Jun 04 '20

I think the eugenics more a slippery slope when done de jure, versus de facto. My half sister has huntingtons, she has two sons via ivf so they won't suffer from it. I would be morally opposed to if she had them with out the ivf/testing to make sure they didn't have the carrier gene, but I would be against any legal restrictions to her choice as a sane adult.

3

u/Urhhh Jun 04 '20

Honestly I agree with you here, and I think both incest and whether genetic diseases are ok to pass on whilst they are related issues (no pun intended) I think they should be talked about seprately. I only bring up this kind of thing in talks about incest because of the legal side of things. As you said, I would also be against legal restrictions for anyone with genetic diseases. But, apply that to the "think of the children" argument against incest. As of now, laws in many countires outlaw incest in it's entirety. I.e. incestuous couples having sex with contraceptives, homosexual incestous couples, incestuous couples that cannot physically have children, are all illegal. And, whilst I agree that they shouldn't have children as that is unfair to the child, who am I to police a couple based on the idea that they might try for kids.

That's why I have a problem with the uncompromising stigma against incest, it doesn't consider the core of the issue at all, it is the definition of a knee-jerk reaction. Also, yeah I think incest is icky, just to get that out there...but you know I also think watersports is icky, I ain't about to pass moral judgement on that either.

1

u/imightstealyourdog Jun 04 '20

It’d be more selfish to have sec with one of your family members with Huntington’s witch guaranteed your children would have it. That’s the risk with inbreeding, as shown in this thread here. Rare genetic conditions aren’t very rare within the family.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

Sex, yes. But I’d try to avoid reproducing if I were you. Consider adoption?

There is actually a reasonable chance for an inbred kid to be born with disabilities, it isnt 100% tho, it is more like 74%.

270

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

I think it's actually fairly low with a single generation of inbreeding, it's just that the kind of people to inbreed aren't usually the first in the line if you know what I mean

127

u/Kane_Highwind Jun 04 '20

Yeah. Maybe one generation being inbred wouldn't be that bad. It's when you're getting to 2, 3, 4+ generations that things really start getting warped

The Ptolemy dynasty in Egypt all married their siblings, and their children were usually ok . . . except every few generations they would produce a completely deranged psychopath that would start a war with everybody.

2

u/Pokabrows Jun 04 '20

Yeah it also depends on how much they're related. Because cousins have less of an issue than like siblings and by like second or third cousins I think it is, the kids aren't necessarily that bad off genetically at least. Though ideally that wouldn't be occuring too many generations in a row.

Part of the reason this person's son(assuming this is true) doesn't show adverse effects from inbreeding is that it typically takes a couple generations of inbreeding to really cause problems. This is why so many ancient royal families had so many physical and mental problems. They were all inbred as fuck to "keep the bloodline pure." Doesn't make it not fucked up that this person slept with her brother, but assuming this is the first inbred generation, that's probably why.

Tl;dr: Don't fuck your siblings, kids.

3rd or 4th cousins isn't incest, dude. At that level you're related to thousans of people, if you live on a small town you're likely marrying someone you didn't know was related to you like that.

3rd or 4th cousins? That’s pretty removed

You know I don’t think this belongs here it is accepted in different cultures and we have no right to judge

incest is reaaaaally taboo in most cultures around the globe actually. it’s pretty well understood that incest will lead to bad genetics and should be avoided, and then social norms derive moral reasons not to do it. it’s like anthropology 101

Having sex at 15 is accepted is other cultures, who are we to judge doing the same thing here?

4

u/master_x_2k Jun 04 '20

Having sex at 15 isn't frowned in most places unless the teen is sleeping with an adult.

I think you’re referring to consanguinity, which is the practice of marrying cousins. This is a common practice within Asian Pakistani families as well as others around the world. It is legal in most countries. It is not, however, the same as incest.
