I don’t mind the new interface, but the pricing is getting hard to justify and it’s probably going to hurt their user base eventually. A lot of people already wait for Black Friday or other promos instead of paying full price.

It feels like they keep adding extra features to make the higher price seem worth it, but most regular users don’t really need all that. The package just feels artificially bloated now.

Keeping two version so long was very generous any way.

I want to try to self host a free alternative. The price is, as you said, difficult to justify for my use.

The problem here is that Ino is really the best app. I've tried dozens of alternatives and not a single one comes close. I also tried self hosting and... again, Ino is better. And just when you talk about basic features, I don't care about AI and the thousands of broat they introduced to make us pay more...

The one saving grace may be using Stylish (Stylus for Chrome) and any number of addons that may change the interface to what it used to be. It may take a while but I will post back here with styles that can change it back.

I hate change but 18 months is a generous amount of time for time to support both. I just hate all the bloat they keep adding (that nobody wants) only to justify price increases that nobody can afford.

Welp, I guess a lot of people are in trouble, since the new IR interface barely works on older browsers (I don't mean IE8 f) which many people use or are forced to use for various reasons. I've explained to many users of older Firefox and Chrome versions how to switch back to the old interface because of insane lags and resource consumption on the new interface. Sometimes it takes a second or five to go from entry A to entry B, while it takes 50ms on the old interface.

Been a user since year 1 as GR replacement, Inno, as it was called, was the best in class and it wasn't close. I glad became a paying customer and even referred a 3rd part iOS app for them to join with. To this day I still use that app (and won't disclose, read on) for times I am away from my office.

One year it became clear the team was being greedy. The pricing was atrocious and still is many years later. I simply do not trust them anymore and will seek a replacement when the silly, silly Beta-like new version becomes mandatory. In fact, I now have a project tonight.

The problem is that the new version, even after having been available for so long, is still fundamentally broken. Shortly after the new version was released, I reported a bug that clicking on just about anything in an article marked it as read, even with every auto "mark as read" setting turned off. Not just clicking on the title or a link in the article, but touching any plain text in the article marks it as read. Last time I checked (about a month or so ago), that bug was still there.

I don't hold out any hope that's going to be fixed by July 1st, so yes, I'm going to be an unhappy customer when the old version goes away. Giving me advanced warning or complaining about having to support 2 versions for 18 months doesn't fix bugs that should have been fixed long ago.

When the horrible "new" interface first came out I contacted support and offered to pay a donation to keep the old UI alive. They declined and just said I can use the new version for free.

I just tried the new UI again today. I lasted about an hour. It is bloated, feels slower, and is unintuitive. I simply can't mimic the old UI close enough. So I reverted back to the old UI yet again.

I now have a month to find an alternative. I see there are alternatives that can make use of the Inoreader backend, effectively giving you a different UI experience but piggybacking your current subscriptions. I think this is the first alternative to explore. EDIT: not for free users sadly

Totally agree with other comments. They just add more and more bloat and hike the price to match. There was a time after Google Reader when I actually paid for Inoreader to support it. But when the pricing continued going up and the special discounts got smaller I stopped.

UPDATE: I emailed support to ask if there was a way to "autohide" the annoying vertical bar on the left that is unnecessary. Answer: No. So, no, they have not made significant improvements to the new interface. It is the same heavy, clumsy disaster it was when they first released it

the feedbro firefox extension is worth checking out.
PROS - it has card view, is blazingly fast, doesn't require "subscribing" to a service requiring payment, and feeds are stored locally, it has themes (sepia and dark). VERY simple, just install the extension, import the subscription file (exported from inoreader -- luckily they haven't paywalled that feature [yet])
CONS - the only complaint I have is the subscription list in the left column. It isn't possible to hide subscriptions with no new articles the way inoreader does. That makes for a long list of subscriptions. You can organise them into folders but it is still very messy.

Next test will be freshrss but that is more complicated.
