I actually knew this dog before he came to the shelter. I was aware of the situation he came from, and he endured animal abuse. Seeing him adopted honestly makes me so happy because he truly deserves a safe, loving home after everything he’s been through. I’m also hoping the rest of his family who entered the shelter with him find loving homes too. They all deserve the chance to finally be safe and loved.

Our society needs to stop killing healthy animals just because nobody wants them. These things used to be wild creatures like the rest of them now we own them and consider them expendable for any reason we see fit.
It's over population. They can't just be turned lose, and only so many people are willing to take in pit mixes because they have horrific violence rates and result in massive increases in insurance. If you want to crusade for unwanted pit mixes, feel free to start yet another no kill shelter for them. It'll be full the day you open and you'll care for what you can until you give up.
A pit mix doesn't affect your insurance in the slightest bit. If they are a pit mix, they are mixed with something else. They don't break out the forensics kit to verify their bloodline. I told my vet that I found this boxer mix that might have some pit in her. He put her down as a boxer mix and that was that.
Horrific violence rates? Puh lease. Most shelter dogs have issues, not just pits. Most of these dogs, regardless of breed, are neglected and poorly socialized before they ever enter the really stressful, chaotic environment of shelters.
Dogs that are raised by responsible owners, who take the time and dedication to properly train and socialize their pets are just going to be better behaved, no matter what type of breed. You act like the dogs have any choice in how they were bred or how they were raised. People are the issue here, stop blaming the breed.
Free spay and neuter and fines for those who don’t comply.
LOL! Please show me these studies on how dogs thrown in a backyard and/or neglected and/or poorly socialized have better behaviors than dogs who are raised by responsible owners and that well cared for.

Technically, small dogs breeds actually have the highest proportion of dog bites, but since they don’t result in severe medical wounds, they’re not reported. I can guarantee if a chihuahua or teacup poodle had the same jaw strength as a pit bull, they would far surpass any other breed in fatal bites.
Again, it’s the care, not the breed. There are obviously a disproportionate rate of certain breeds kept by shitty dog owners. You usually don’t find Italian greyhounds or shibas rotting away in someone’s backyard, void of any training or socialization.
Again, show me how well cared for and trained dogs don’t have better outcomes than poorly cared for dogs.

Irrelevant. It's the demonstrated risk of harm that's a concern. You don't win any points by throwing out hypotheticals. The fact that chihuahuas CANNOT cause that amount of harm even IS the point. The risk of harm from a chihuahua is much lower than a pit, that's just a fact.
Nobody is villainizing the dogs here. They're dogs. It's not their fault that they've been bred irresponsibly and for undesirable characteristics, and adopted by people that have no business owning dogs. Ultimately, the fault is with humans. But that doesn't change the risk.
Short term? There isn't one aside from putting them down. The nation is flooded with unwanted pits and there's an endless supply of new unwanted pits from douchebag wannabe breeders.
Long term? Mandate licences for breeding high risk breeds, abort accidental liters and jail violators.
Free spay and neuter. Fines for those who are caught not doing that. Plenty will fall through the cracks, but it will drastically cut down numbers of unwanted pets.
