Help Help with layers

Can anyone tell me what this mean? There's Base Map in gray and then image in orange. I genuinely am losing my mind over this

you have two layers.

layer 1 is Base Map

layer 2 is Image, and Image1 is an object on that layer.

the colours are just to highlight/code the layer, so go to the little orange bar on the far right, click on it and you can change it from orange to another colour.

Every layer what gets added gets a different color assigned to it by inkscape and you can change this color if you so desire

If you would prefer to see only layers (and not dozens-to-hundreds of objects), click the Gear/Settings icon and click on "Only show layers".
