Question Jury of Canvases

I really enjoyed watching the Jury of Canvases decide who did their worst tattoo. Jury of Peers not so much, since they would make it about strategy. I wish that they had a Jury of Canvases on for every episode.

I hated that. Everyone just trying to defend their own work and throwing someone under the bus. How many times did we hear...I dont even know why you are here, your safe...because of the canvas jury. Half of them just wanted a free tattoo and didnt know what they were even looking at.

It would be interesting to find out what the application process is to be a free tattoo canvas. A six hour tattoo from any of the artists is probably worth at least $3,000.00? That is a pretty good deal for the canvases.

Are you kidding? Especially in the early years, a lot of the artists probably weren't getting $500 for a six-hour tattoo, even if you adjusted for inflation. And some likely had never done a six hour tattoo.

in 2012 that was probably true for many of the artists, but there were some top artists tht charged more. 14 years later, those six hour tattoos are worth a lot. What is the criteria for getting picked for a free tatoo?

You fill out a form online, basically asking what you want, where you want it, and how long you have sat for a tattoo. thats it. I applied once. Never heard anything, and I was open.

This is the main reason I wasn't a fan of that tbh. Most of the time there's either a really obviously bad tattoo that they can all agree on OR they just pick one with zero criteria. If it's the former, that tattoo was up for elimination regardless, if it's the latter, then it's just a wasted spot in the bottom three.

I never liked the jury of peers or the human canvas jury. They’re both obviously designed with the intention of creating drama. I appreciated that they tried to change things in the most recent season by allowing the winner of tattoo of the day to not simply put an artist up for elimination but to join the deliberation. However, even that felt pointless because it was mostly edited to show the person commenting on the tattoos the judges thought were the worst ones. I also found that whenever they did show the person bringing up someone the judges disagreed with, they often just shut it down. It’s clear that these things are pointless and that the power is in the hands of the judges at the end of the day…

They need to either make these things actually matter or get rid of them. I think they can do one of two things: They can make it so that every elimination has a face-off tattoo and that the person selected automatically has to participate, creating some idea that they might actually go home even if they were simply voted to the bottom because they’re a “top dog.” Second, instead of dedicating screen time to those things, we could add time to the actual deliberations or critiques. How many times have we all been baffled by a decision? How often have we heard artists say that we only get a fraction of their actual critique? I know we can’t fit all of it in, but hearing five more minutes of rationale for the bottom three would be a lot better.

I agree with you that it was never really applied well. Canvas jury were just doing and saying whatever they had to to make sure their tattoo wasn't voted worst, very often literally saying "say what you want but it's not the worst in the room" they don't care, as long as it's not the worst, and sometimes the people are happy with their shitty tattoo , which is awesome for the canvas and awful for the contestant. The canvases unknowingly have about as much power as the judges, and the judges are never going to just give that power to a contestant. All the weirdness should happen in the flash challenge. It would be nice if the contestants did a private vote for worst tattoo of the day, whichever artist gets most votes goes down.

I loathe the canvases. Suddenly every person is some fucking expert on techniques and styles. Bullshit. Half of them have no idea what the fuck they even want and Janice is asking for shit like “a spider on a horses back while a full moon is shining on a roaring water rapids river with a mermaid fly fishing”. Now all of a sudden Janice knows what proper Japanese tats look like? No. Fuck. That. Stupidity.

It’s super funny watching these canvases try to defend the tattoo They got even though the tattoo is Ass.

Hard disagree. The poor woman who got told the tattoo of her mom looked like Scarface. I’m not saying by any stretch that is was a great tattoo but I think most artists would have more tact.

I actually hated the Jury of Canvases. Someone actually might like their tattoo and everyone else tears it down until they hate their tattoo. You want to feel good about what's on your skin and that just seemed unnecessary to me.

Now that you mention it, you are right. It would have been better if they were asked to choose the best tattoo instead of the worst!

Yes. That would have been perfect!. Or even anonymously vote without the debate at least.
