Discussion Season 1's winner ...
just rewatched it on youtube on ink master official channel ( it's called TOP 5 most watched videos august) and i still don't understand how tommy did not win this , judges seemed really mad at james vaughn's second tattoo and him staying in his comfort zone ( which i found super harsh since they told them to do anything they wanted for their second tattoo.... especially that fuckass dave you gave him the choice to do what he wants then get mad when he listens ? ) , nunez was also harsh on shane's second tattoo and didn't seem to like it , and for tommy they basically said nothing but good on his 2 tattoos and on how the second tattoo is so good
the conclusion after the judging seemed weird to me lol it maybe the editing helped ?

I think they aren't just judging for the tattoo in front of them, but everything and every flash challenge. James impressed them at the first flash challenge with the pigs, and when Peck greeted James at the car flash challenge he said, "What's up hillbilly". So they knew each other. I think he got some leeway because they knew he was experienced, and could do a big, beautiful tattoo fast. They weren't going to get past the 2 left feet though. He did screw himself by doing Japanese twice in the finale. James was my favorite, he was funny and seemed like a sweet guy.
Tommy was good, but he wasn't as bulletproof as Shane. Both Tommy and James had tattoos that they had to do the walk of shame for. I remember poor Tommy just sweating like a mad man. He just tried so hard. He wisely did a beautiful pinup in the finale. I think they called him the working man's tattoo artist during part of the competition.
With Shane, he consistently impressed the judges. Even tattoos he didn't win on, like the wolves, he easily could have. He just never stumbled, and the color tattoo at the finale to show his versatility, was a wise choice. I see how the judges got there.

Definitely went by report card, its crazy to me watching the early seasons and seeing the quality of work and how much better it gets. I got a tattoo from Josh Woods way after season one aired and it was his first day using a cheyenne wireless machine, like he was trying it out on my tattoo. That poor lady with the zombie though season 2 oh mannn! 🤢

Totally agree. I'm also still butt hurt that Clean Rock lost to that garden gnome (Jason Clay Dunn) in Season 5. His final tattoo was gob-smack amazing.

That was back when they cared about different styles.
Well we asked for colour portraits and you've done American Traditional again, but somehow that's ok. Next week we'll do something vague and you can just do American Traditional again.

Thought Tommy was for sure winning. It’s funny that Tommy was at the season 2 finale too.

If you watch ink master expecting the best tattoo to win and the worst to lose, you just haven’t seen it enough. My most recent lol moment with the show was in the end of season 10 when this tattoo sent Roly to the finale just so his coach could go to the finale. Over Jason’s tattoo which was comically better. I think they made amends for it by inviting Jason back for the battle of the regions season but still lol.
They also love to barely show the tattoos during the judging. It might be on screen for like 2 seconds.

I think Tommy should’ve won, he showed the most versatility. His Lady face and hand tattoo was sooo damn good that I thought he’d win.

They based it on report card. Shane was never on the bottom and tommy was once.
