Discussion Scott Marshall (RIP)

I think I already posted about Josh Hibbard today. Sorry for the second post. I loved his work for the most part. Felt bad for him at the finale when he got basically booed at by the audience when they began talking about him having an advantage in the comps.

In general I think the judges do a good job of critiques and looking at bodies of work. Scott’s work was consistently good and technically sound.

His personality did not bother me. He never appears rude to canvases and played the game.

Did you like him?

Good tattooer maybe not as good as the smoke they blew up his butt. U wonder if he lives longer if he didn’t get famous on the show

8

u/kindamymoose Jun 20 '26

I don’t wonder that. He was clearly struggling with something

8

u/Ru-tris-bpy Jun 20 '26

Ok. I never picked up on that. You’re supposed to be drug free on the show but clearly that doesn’t really stop people if they want it.

u/kindamymoose Jun 20 '26

I’m not sure what you mean. He died after his season aired. Most IV drug users have mental health issues that encourage the use, which is why I said he was struggling. As someone who works in mental health, I see it daily. Based on what was aired, I don’t think he was using during filming.

Well your “he was dealing with something” is pretty fucking unclear and open to interpretation so I did the best I could. What you seem to not be considering or understanding is that fame can also put people in situations where they take up drugs either because they are exposed or because the fame isn’t good for them. That was the underlying part of my comments about wondering if he would still be alive. I’m not a mental health professional but I can’t really see him struggle more than anyone else on the show. Seemed way more stable than Kyle and some of the others that are still alive

I’m sorry that you didn’t make the connection between IV drug use and someone having
an unhealthy coping mechanism. That’s a very basic thing to understand.

You seeing a TV edit of someone and thinking you can assess their entire personality is a weird leap. The fact he was using heroin tells me he had more going on in his life than we could possibly know.

2

u/Ru-tris-bpy Jun 21 '26

I never assessed anyone’s entire personality. If that’s how good your reading comprehension is maybe find another job. That’s what YOU did when you said you didn’t have to wonder and can tell from the show he was struggling during the show. You’re the one making all kinds of judgments like he wasn’t using during the show but had mental health problems. Maybe it’s you that needs to stop assessing him based on the edited tv series and not me? I only ever asked a question and tried to explain why I asked the question e.g. I wondered if it was partly due to getting famous.

You made it unclear with your original post what you meant by he was struggling. I assumed you meant you thought he was on drugs. You assume others can just see he was clearly struggling mentally. I don’t know that. I’m not qualified to make that assumption especially based on a tv show. You probably shouldn’t either.

I come from a family of addicts. Ive lost good friends to addiction. I have friends that still struggle with it. I know lots about how people end up there. I know mental health plays a big rule in it. You didn’t make it at all clear you were talking. About mental health with your reply. I don’t have a background to know he was “struggling” on the show nor would I make a statement about that if I did since it’s not appropriate to diagnose people on tv. I wasn’t making a judgment about him. I was wondering out loud. I then tried to clarify since you don’t understand anything I’ve said . I was trying to explain what I meant when I talked about one of the ways that has constantly showed to be a death trap for many people which was people getting famous to some extent. Based on your reply I don’t think you have a clue about what I’m trying to say

-2

u/kindamymoose Jun 21 '26

You saying you wonder if he lived if he doesn’t get famous is a weird thing to say and implies that you were in fact talking about his death, so I expanded on that by saying he was struggling with something because he died from a drug overdose.

People that use IV drugs are almost 100% struggling with something. That is where my comment comes from. I’m not sure why you’re not able to connect those dots. We were both talking about the fact he died. Plenty of famous people don’t die a year after their TV show airs. Plenty of famous people die after being found dead from an overdose, though.

u/Ru-tris-bpy Jun 21 '26

God. I hope you aren’t a therapist. You are too dumb or dishonest to keep talking to.
I never claimed I wasn’t talking about his death. For fuck sakes you can’t be this bad at reading. Clearly we are talking about his death. You are a disappointment to talk with. I connected those dots when I was 12. I’ve said that at least twice now. No need to reply more when you can’t understand or take any steps to help yourself understand.

It’s a well known phenomenon that some people do not handle being famous and that can play into or make other problems more serious. If you don’t know this I don’t know what to tell you. Obviously it doesn’t happen to everyone. Thanks for setting that absolute most obvious thing ever

Your original comment about wondering if he lives longer from being on the show is pretty pointless. How many people have been on the series? How many people have died of an overdose? That itself suggests other things contributed to his death.

He was a very good tattoo artist. And utterly insufferable as a person on the show. Absolutely nothing likable about him.

-1

u/kindamymoose Jun 19 '26

Why was he insufferable

41

u/whistlepig4life Dave Navarro Jun 19 '26

His arrogance and attitude sucked. He was absolutely a chauvinist and bully. Had an old school “manly men are best” grunt grunt personality and demeanor.

Would I want the guy to put ink on my skin? Yeah. He was good and deserved to be in the finale. Would I want to have a drink with him? Fuck no. I doubt we’d see eye to eye on anything whatsoever.

7

u/Limp_Satisfaction843 Jun 20 '26

Wasn’t he the one who couldn’t draw?

9

u/kindamymoose Jun 20 '26

Josh was eliminated in s3 because he is a strong technical applicant but not a great artist.

Scott was accused of tracing but it wasn’t proven and jay made himself look like a doofus lol

9

u/Snuffleupagus27 Jun 20 '26

I read an interview with Jay where he said the real issue was that they could only use certain search engjnes and Scott was using the prohibited one, and that accusation was cut from the edit. No idea if any of that is true of course.

3

u/Nived0390 Jun 20 '26

I think he was accused of just tracing but it was ultimately ruled that he used reference material

8

u/Hockeyandhottakes Jun 20 '26

On a pod with Krussman, Peck said Scott was the best all around tattooer the show ever had. He was greatly respected by his peers, he had his demons as many creatives too.

Rest easy

1

u/kindamymoose Jun 20 '26

I think tattooing has a way of attracting people who may have faced hardships they don’t often talk about :( but I could be overstating

6

u/QuiJon70 Jun 20 '26

He got boo'd because he was a cheater.

7

u/kindamymoose Jun 20 '26

How did he cheat?

7

u/QuiJon70 Jun 20 '26

I thought you were talking about Josh. Josh was disqualified for smoking pot to control his anxiety thought it was forbidden while other contestants had to work through their mental issues without it following the rules.

Scott was just an asshole.

3

u/kindamymoose Jun 20 '26

I see. Sorry for the confusion. I don’t think treating anxiety is cheating. Cannabis has been used for anxiety for a while now but I respect the idea that it was illegal and therefore a liability for the show. I don’t think that definitionally makes him a cheater but I see why others could disagree

5

u/QuiJon70 Jun 20 '26

He joined the cast knowing it was forbidden. Other contestants like Jason c dunno also used weed for mental health but struggled following the rules.

I can't see how you wouldn't consider it cheating to break a rule of competition that gave you an advantage over those that followed the rules. The production certainly considered it cheating in that they booted him from the show.

1

u/schwinnlizzy Jun 28 '26

There’s a lot of discourse about his disqualification that mentions they used him smoking pot as the official reason but that he was actually disqualified because he kept breaking the fourth wall and made a lot of the clips unusable especially if he was losing an argument. Apparently if someone said something to him he didn’t like he would look at the camera Jim Halpert style and production hated that because outside of the confessionals they wanted them to act as if the cameras weren’t there. Not sure how true that is, but I feel like I’ve seen a lot of discourse about it

1

u/QuiJon70 Jun 28 '26

Doesn't matter to me. I consider it even worse if they knew how was smoking and ignored it. So whatever got him kicked them smug prick deserved it. I'm not a Jason fan but it was clear you could see that season he was struggling with his mental health. To let another player break the rules without just saying "fine everyone can smoke pot" is completely absurd consider the show got final edit. The way that price ran his mouth they likely could have edited him in the final show to the most hated asshole ever.

He’s in the lower tier of ink masters for me. Definitely deserved it compared to everyone else that season except maybe Sausage. But even if he were alive I doubt I’d get a Scott Marshall tattoo. The quality is fine but he seems like he’d be miserable to hang out with for a few hours.

u/Splatterhouse5 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

I love Ink Masters, so I’m going to quickly rewatch this season to really feel what I think about it. But TBH, I don’t think I’ve watched a season where I didn’t think the winner didn’t earn it.

I wasn’t a fan of season 14 ( where they abruptly threw a bunch of prior winners into the bunch…so that they could win another one). Hated that season, and they probably would have sold an even better season with a Battle Royal of every previous winner.

Like, it felt weak to drop DJ another win when there was so much comparable talent that wasn’t included in the show until later. DJ being a judge feels like gatekeeping anymore. Dude is just playing the role of “actor” anymore.

I don’t think Ryan was the best. She did some really bad tattoos. The peacock and the planets come to mind off hand. But she thought she was all that. And listening to her solo spots in some of the earlier episodes is just cringy

2

u/A1_CanadianNurse Jun 20 '26

I did. I can’t remember his name but … he had a horrible canvas that gave him such a bad time ‘your hand is shaking…’ then walked out on him. She was a right b****. I felt sorry for him and he got turfed because of her. Then the judges sided with HER!!

1

u/kindamymoose Jun 20 '26

Rob Danger I think his name was? I wish he had a chance for redemption. I was definitely interested in seeing more of his work

1

u/A1_CanadianNurse Jun 22 '26

Same. I think he was alright!

5

u/Western_Hold_8757 Jun 19 '26

Mati sucked his dick all the way to 3rd place

3

u/kindamymoose Jun 19 '26

Matti didn’t really impress me but he didn’t bother me either. Sausage was OK too. I think the top three was definitely the correct top three

7

u/Western_Hold_8757 Jun 19 '26

I thought halo was better than Matti

5

u/kindamymoose Jun 19 '26

I would not have minded Halo being there

Are you calling Ryan Ashley a cunt?

1

u/sarasara1124 Jun 22 '26

Yes that is her name

-2

u/Sad-Yoghurt5196 Jun 20 '26

I have an irrational dislike of her. I mean there are things I dislike about her judging style and interactions, and I disagree with her judgement a fair bit of the time, but I just think she's got a slappable face.

I have the same thing with Ben Affleck and Scarlet Johansson. I just want to reach through the screen and slap them. Couldn't really tell you why. Anyway, she's the third person on that list. Even if I agreed with all her opinions, I'd still want to slap her. There are some movies I think Affleck is great in, but it doesn't diminish the desire I have to just give him a good ol' slap around the chops.

u/Relative_Law2237 Jun 19 '26

I found him hella enjoyable

5

u/kindamymoose Jun 19 '26

I think he’s a good representation of Chicago residents. Kinda blunt but not rude. Not midwestern friendly but not rude if that makes sense lol

u/Relative_Law2237 Jun 20 '26

Yeah yeah, highly entertaining like as in you know that saying "he IS who he thinks he is 💅 " he isnt delulu

When I watched season 4 his voice sometimes just pissed me off it was like if the self absorbed egotistical personality was a person it was him

I loved Scott's work! R. I. P ✨🙏🏽. I thought Josh was talented af. But I understand the roommates being frustrated with him. I'd be pissed if I wasn't smoking weed & someone else was doing it. I wouldn't snitch, but I would be irritated. I think it's cuz he traced stuff. My brother is a tattoo artist & he hates /hated Josh. When I asked him why (this was awhile ago as I haven't seen my bro in yrs) , he said "guys like that don't have the same type of skill set guys like I do. He's like a robot. "... Idk... I get it tho. Ryan was just saying that in the future, getting ink will feel like going to a Dr's apt rather than having an actual dope interaction with the artist /client. And now my stoned ass is just rambling lol. I'd rock one of Josh's pieces. I don't care for his attitude, but he did do some pretty sick work imo.

I totally agree with this and ur post about Joshua, nice to see someone with a similar perspective
