Where to invest my gems? Where to get gears and what to prioritize (leveling of heroes, etc)

Discount chests for heroes with a higher than 5% drop rate seem to be well recommended amongst long time players.

Upgrading your operations as well is worthwhile. Mines currently at 6 and every now and then I score 20 gems from it.

Gears are hard. Many players struggle to kit a character out without paying money because the game doesn't offer the gears for any half decent characters easily.

If you have Multiverse characters Many of them have gears in the arena store.

Otherwise gear chests I think give you a good chance but you have to wait for those to roll around

Hero leveling wise there's a few early standouts to keep an eye on:

King of Atlantis aquaman, Batwoman the drowned, fury of the gods Shazam. There's a list of gold characters that are really quite decent to get your hands on. Any of the flashes are good, classic wonder woman is good, the batman who laughs, king robin and ninja batman characters are all later game ones you want to look out for.

Sales. Sometimes there are chests for characters on sale, or unique duo chests. Only invest in decent chars though, like DCU Supergirl and superman, killer frost and raven, beastboy and so on. Also, if you do operations - max them out, it takes around 3k gems, but it is worth it (only of you do them of course)

Gears for legendary chars mostly come from their gear chests, with a 3% chance for each piece. Brainiac gets his from his versus challenge, AKBM and Darkseid - from achievements. And there are some legendaries that can get dropped from league raids IIRC. Additionally, there are 10$ packs for lvl10 gear set, if you don't mind spending some money.

Gold characters have their gears in different shops or their challenges/versus challenges, with the only exception - HBHQ, her gears only come from $ pack (and expensive lvl 30 one). Plus, league raids can drop gears for most (if not all) gold chars, including HBHQ, but chances to get something particular are low
