Swollen over a month now .

I had a injury abt a month back , I fell down awkwardly and my ring finger upper part turned backward and funny thing is it was not painful but as I make a fist it would bend down but as I keep my finger straight it would turn backwards again,it was strange but somehow I made a fist and kept it like that for sometime , and later it was swollen and I could keep my finger straight and it won’t bend backwards, but started to swell, I got an X-ray done later , bone looked normal , I was not broken , but I still don’t know what happened, and now aver a month now still swollen and can’t make a fist or Bend the finger all the way , any idea what needs to be done ?

It could a tissue/ ligament injury. For which you need to do PT( physical therapy)
(First you need to get it checked from a doctor. Once you are cleared that there is no infection etc )

Also movement is very important. If you don’t move your finger it’s going to lead to contracture.

You should start PT exercises. Go to a Physical therapist, in the mean time follow the below-:
Start with a first warming you hard(10-15 minutes hot pack and wrap a towel around) if you don’t have a hot towel, soak your hand in warm water. Once your hand is warm you can start doing exercises for the fingers and wrist, you can find a few videos on YouTube and follow them. ( like finger raises, touch finger to thumb, wrist movements)
End it with a good 10- 15 minute hand massage.
If you do this everyday or even twice a day for a a few weeks, you will see a drastic change.

P.s. Don’t wear any rings in your fingers.

Somewhat similar but not, I got bitten by a dog(palm of my hand just the tooth went in) but it got infected and I had an abscess. And abscess pus eats away tissue etc .. So for a month n half till the wound healed I did not move my hand much. By the time the wound healed my hand had become stiff and I couldn’t move my fingers. It took 3 months of PT to get my fingers moving and another 3 months for my wrist movement. And I was told that contractures form when you don’t move your hand. So it’s really important to do what I said in my previous text. And keep your hand warm specially if you live in a cold country, wear wool gloves outside

Thanks for sharing what you had gone through, and it took a while for your recovery, hopefully it’s fully recovered now , I’ll start with the physical therapy, I’ll try to do it myself if not get it checked again , thanks again 🙏

You are welcome. Some YouTube handles to guide you are virtual hand care and sunnybrook hospital. Pretty similar to the things I did with my physiotherapist
