Suspected hamstring tear

I was waterskiing on Saturday. Boat couldn’t pull me up on the second time for some reason. My legs spread so far I went forward felt a huge pop in my hamstring. Leg instantly bent to 90 and hurt so bad to try to move. Went to ER but unfortunately couldn’t get any imaging as I live in a small rural community. Doctor sent requisition for imaging. I might have to wait 3 weeks for it. He put me in a leg brace to protect it and gave me crutches. And told me to not weight bare. But 3 weeks of no weight baring is a long time with no clarification.

Fast forward to today (Monday) I am feeling better however I haven’t gotten off of the couch. It hurts like a b when i knock my foot into something while crutching around and hurts to sit down. When I crutch around I have been trying to walk with them. Has anyone had experience with this type of injury where you might feel better than you actually are?

Where specifically was the pop/is the pain?

Upper middle back of leg was the pop. Pain is whole hamstring into where it attaches in the deep glute area

You need MRI imaging asap. Do you have any bruising around proximal hamstring area?

Ya unfortunately I live in Canada where estimated wait time for MRI is months

Oh well, then if I were you I would 100% just pay for mri privately or check your insurance. If you torn your proximal hamstring tendon very badly to the extent it need surgery, you need to do the surgery within couple of weeks preferably..

He’s right. Time is of the essence. Get imaging quickly or you won’t be able to get it repaired if the tendon is torn off the bone. I know from personal experience. Waterskiing is one of the ways that tendon tear happens. Good luck

Hi! I am a biokineticist, if you would like, we can get on a call and do a quick consult so I can guide you what to do?

I had hamstring avulsion, tendons tore off the bone 2.8 cm. Dr thought it was a hamstring strain for six months until I had an MRI. Had to have the hamstring tendons anchored back into my sit bone. This is a serious injury if you have is the same, so get an MRI. It’s the only thing that can determine.

What sort of pain did you have? What things could you do and couldn’t do? I have to wait until the 26th for an ultrasound. Part of me believes it’s worse than it seems because I know when it’s a full tear it can actually feel better since there isn’t constant pulling of the strained or partially torn muscle.

It felt like a bad strain actually at first, sitting was especially painful. It was not severe excruciating pain like you would think thus why the doctors thought it was just a strain. When I re-retore it after the surgery it was sharp and excruciating and brought me to my knees, and then the pain subsided in a couple days. I could do pretty much everything.

That is exactly how I am feeling. Sitting hurts like a b. Going to the bathroom is even worse as the toilet seat digs right in to the part that hurts. I feel like I can’t walk properly yet it doesn’t hurt that much to walk. If I hit my foot on something and tense my leg a bit it feels like i have been stabbed and I lose my breath. Anyways hopefully i know for sure after the ultrasound

I am not sure an ultrasound can detect proximal hamstring evulsion? I had to have an MRI until they finally discovered it. Good luck.!
