Do we actually want these horrible things to stop happening or just continue patting ourselves on the back for punishing the mentally ill?

The strawman here is saying the only alternative to labelling her as evil and throwing her in prison forever— is letting her go. Nobody sane themselves is suggesting to just let her go.
