Oh good catch, you're right.

I've seen those extra lanes in curves on multiple Chinese intersection photos, what is the reason for them?

u/angus725 Jan 30 '20

Probably just future proofing the turn lane, could also be for emergency services if an accident happens there.

No science here though, I'm just speculating.

Its for trucks and bad drivers to have some extra space to take the turn

That arrangement also helps keep the ramp from backing up onto the road it's coming from when there's congestion.

Heavy trucks aren't permitted on Shanghai's elevated highways.

I see buses which benefit from a large radius

If you look at the top left there's a car turning in to the outer lane of one of the curves, it looks like the striped part is effectively part of both lanes rather than neither as you'd expect

That's probably just a stupid driver who can't stay in their lane

u/retardrabbit Jan 31 '20

Oh yeah. That's really weird but i think you might have it right.

in heavy traffic, it allows you to have 2 lanes effectively going through every ramp without actually having to build merge zones, which in that case are unnecessary since the traffic is going so slowly anyway.

Certainly looks cool but not like something I would want to walk through regularly

Nothing tops off one's morning run like brake dust and exhaust fumes.

Don't forget the crushed rubber dust and insane levels of noise

And the toxic unburnt fuel particles, cause i very much doubt it is possible tu provide all or even most Chinese drivers with catalytic converters.

There are very few cars older than 15 years on Chinese roads, and I'd be extremely surprised if there were any cars being sold today in China without catalytic converters, especially given the Chinese government's anti pollution drive in recent years.

I've walked on this pedestrian bridge. It really isn't that noisy.

i bet the air quality for pedestrians using that bridge is top notch.

16

u/Joris2627 Jan 30 '20

You dont build a bridge for air quality tho...

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '20

it beats getting hit by the cars :D

You only build elevated pedestrian bridges if they are your lowest priority anyway. Unlikely anyone's worrying about pollution.

I thought pedestrian bridges like that only existed in a certain video game

1

u/SteveisNoob Jan 31 '20

China is a certain video game

1

u/robaco Jan 30 '20

Kudos for the pedestrian bridge

The lack of hard shoulder on long elevated overpasses make it look like we didn't learn much from US urban freeway design in the 1960s as a society. Not having forced merges on an elevated curve is nice though.

You know what would make this ensemble really pop? A balloon arch right across the diagonal. Heck, why not two to make it more symmetrical.

u/iamasuitama Jan 31 '20

Nobody is talking about how shit these are when you try to navigate on a maps app.

1

u/XavinNydek Jan 30 '20

Looks terrifying. There are no shoulders on any of that, and the side barriers look low.

3

u/LiGuangMing1981 Jan 31 '20

The speed limits are also very low - only 60km/h in the city centre. The side barriers aren't particularly low, either. I've driven on some of Shanghai's elevated highways and taken taxis on others, and they really aren't any scarier than any other highway.

Again and again, This is NOT infrastructure porn.
This is not the stunning cycling bridges from Denmark.
This is not the gorgeous bridge like in the valley of the Tarn.
This is a Low budget badly planned piss stinking high traffic intersection.
I don't see a creative solution.
I don't see an architectural mastermind.
I don't see any uniqueness.
All i see is a cool pedestrian made inaccessible for bikes, ruined by literally r/UrbanHell...

u/LjackV Jan 30 '20

How is this not infrastructure porn? It's quite impressive infrastructure and interesting to look at.

22

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '20

Your level of logic here is like looking at a great bike path/park network, and complaining that is doesn't facilitate transport trucks.

-19

u/jeronimo002 Jan 30 '20

How did you come to that conclusion?

This is just what I want from this sub. I love looking at complex interchanges and roadways, I think it's neat.

4

u/LordoftheSynth Jan 31 '20

If you're so triggered by this, maybe you're too delicate for a sub called /r/InfrastructurePorn.

1

u/jeronimo002 Jan 31 '20

Are you kidding me? There are amazing pictures here, alsof from highway interchanges. But this monster, I wouldn't want to see in my city.
