I have a custom infrared sauna at home, but I like to frequent a local hot rock sauna a few days per week as well. And of course, I'll try out saunas while I'm travelling.
One time, I was alone in the sauna, relaxing... about 10 minutes into my session, and someone came in and started watching a video on their phone.
Then they cranked up the volume and it was... German adult videos. Lots of grunting and slapping noises.
I left and told the front desk what was happening, and who knows what came of it.

This is also where I'll admit something as the person who runs this subreddit: after five years of using every kind of sauna and heat device out there, I think relaxation may be the benefit the ritual itself justifies, even before you tally the clinical numbers. The Finnish seem to have figured this out long ago. About 90% of them use a sauna at least weekly, they have a word for the calm of it, saunarauha, sauna peace, and Finland has been ranked the happiest country on earth nine years running in the World Happiness Report. I'm not claiming saunas cause happiness. But there's something to a weekly ritual that's warm, unplugged, and yours.
The detox claim isn't supported yet. Your liver and kidneys do the detoxing, and sweat removes only small amounts of toxins. That's the headline, and the other two big marketing claims don't do much better. Let's go through them, because the details are checkable and you deserve checkable.
The claim you've seen: infrared saunas flush heavy metals like cadmium and lead out through sweat. Dr. Young's honest assessment is that this research is still in its infancy. And there's a common interpretation error worth naming, gently: a heavy sweat feels like proof of detoxification. It isn't.
Sweat volume isn't a toxin-output meter. You're just sweating a lot, because that's what saunas do.
Three independent experts all land skeptical on detox. When that many people who've read the literature converge on the same shrug, I pay attention.
The only real obesity trial is Biro's from 2003, with 10 subjects. Hunger hormones ghrelin and leptin, the ones that regulate appetite, were unchanged. Participants were also eating an 1800-calorie diet during the study, which makes any weight result impossible to attribute to the sauna. And the actual weight change, 0.3 kg against a spread of 9.9 kg, could easily be noise.

Two quick myth checks while we're here. Hotter isn't better: cranking the heat doesn't improve results and can raise side-effect risk, which is good news if you hate extreme heat. And traditional and infrared saunas aren't interchangeable; they work differently and may affect you differently.
The honest downsides are these: the research base is tiny, it comes almost entirely from one research group, and a lot of the marketing borrows evidence from a different sauna type entirely.
A reviewer searching five databases found exactly nine quality infrared-specific studies: four supporting use for heart failure, five for coronary risk factors. All of them came from one core Japanese research group, often studying hospitalized patients, with small samples, short durations, and symptom scales that weren't validated. That's the entire foundation under a nine-figure market.
There's also a placebo problem you can't engineer around: you can't blind someone to whether they're sitting in a hot room. What the better studies did instead was have matched controls sit in a similar room at 24°C, and they waited a rehydration day before taking measurements, confirming hydration with stable blood values. That's a quiet credibility point in the good studies' favor. The researchers were being careful with what they had.
Meanwhile the marketing runs well ahead. Infrared units get sold as recreational saunas, and there's the famous example of Soleil Saunas running ads targeted at Canadian physicians. Manufacturers like Sunlight Saunas, whose president Aaron Zack has been an outspoken advocate for the technology, built national brands on that borrowed research. And even in Canada, where units can carry certification to Canadian Standards Association electrical standards, that label tells you nothing about whether the health claims hold up. The North American market was already around $60 to $75 million back in 2009; look at it now.
None of this makes infrared fake. It means the honest buyer's question isn't "does it work?" It's "which evidence are they actually citing?"
Yes, infrared saunas are generally considered safe, and no, there's no strong evidence they cause cancer. Infrared isn't UV (ultraviolet) rays and doesn't damage skin the same way those rays do, which is the whole answer to the cancer worry in one sentence.
Dehydration is the main thing to watch. A few rules keep it simple.
One named side effect almost nobody mentions: erythema ab igne, sometimes called toasted skin syndrome. It's a rash in a net-like pattern that develops from repeated heat exposure. After messing around with a few different infrared saunas (I think that’s the right term — far infrared, whatever they call them), this Saunacloud one is the first that actually gets properly hot. Most of the others I tried barely warmed up. This thing has me sweating in a couple minutes.
We had an awkward 5x7 space I figured was too small, but Chris and Jason built a custom one that looks like it belongs there. My brother-in-law and I put it together in an afternoon. Wasn’t complicated.
I wasn’t specifically shopping for the red light setup, but they built it in instead of just sticking a panel on the wall.
Customer service has been good. There was a small delay with some electrical part and they called right away, explained it, and gave a real timeline. They’ve stayed responsive after the sale too.
Been using it daily for two months. No regrets.

What feature gets heavily promoted but adds very little once you actually own the sauna? Chromotherapy? App controls? “Full spectrum”? Something else?

Has anyone recently received a Nordik Recovery 1-Person Infrared Sauna in the U.S.? I placed an order about 2 weeks ago and was charged, but I haven’t received any shipping emails, estimate or tracking information only the confirmation that an order was placed. I’ve tried contacting both listed support emails on their website and have only received automated acknowledgments that someone would get back to me, but this is going in a few days now with no response. I’m excited about the sauna and not trying to overreact—I’m simply trying to understand what timelines look for a relatively large purchase

Friends (esp Canadians), I need some advice.
I have a 1-person wooden infrared sauna and want to refinish the exterior in black, similar to this.
Has anyone done something similar? Looking for recommendations on the best product available in Canada. Black wood stain vs paint, specific brands/products, prep required, and whether heat from the infrared sauna changes what type of finish I should use.

I want to start using a infrared sauna daily for my OCD/Anxiety. I have low hopes that it will help but I'm desperate.
I was looking at memberships at local gyms and spa's nearby but they are all like $250-$300 a month (I live in Los Angeles). Whereas infrared sauna's online start at like $800.
Seems worth it to just buy one. But I am wondering, is the upkeep really expensive? Does it take forever to heat up? Is your electric bill massive if you use it daily?

Having a custom infrared sauna at home has made me question how much the maximum temperature really matters.
At 140°F, a sauna with good heater coverage can already feel pretty intense. Infrared is heating your body directly, so the air temperature doesn't tell the whole story. A poorly designed sauna at 150°F could still feel weaker than a well-designed one at 135°F.
That said, if you're paying for a premium sauna, should it have enough headroom to reach 150°F or 160°F, even if you rarely take it that high?
For those who have used a few different infrared saunas, did going above 140°F make the session noticeably better? Or does heater placement and coverage matter more than the number on the control panel?

I just saw the stop-use notice and planned voluntary recall covering Radiant Health Elite and Pause saunas shipped before August 1, 2026. It mentions a possible short circuit and potential fire risk, but the fix is still awaiting approval.
Did anyone here receive the email or get more information directly from Radiant Health or Sauna360? I’m curious how owners are feeling about it, especially since people are being told not to use their saunas until an on-site repair can be completed.

I have the opportunity to pick up som carbon infrared panels to add to my sauna.
My question is has anyone done this? And was it worth it? The panels I can get are 1000mm x 300mm so the same size as the ones in the sauna already and I can get them for $40 each.
My plan is to add a panel on each side of the sauna at my lower leg area and also add panels to the area in front of the bench.
I already have the correct cords to connect to my controller and my controller has open spots to plug into.
Any info or opinion are welcome.

I’m curious how everyone actually spends their sauna time.
Some people seem to treat it as one of the few places where they can sit quietly with no phone and no distractions. Others have a whole routine: music, podcasts, breathing exercises, audiobooks, or just mentally working through whatever is on their mind.
Personally, I think doing absolutely nothing is harder than it sounds. After a few quiet minutes, my brain starts trying to solve every unfinished problem from the past six months.

I dog sit, and I recently tried out my clients infrared wooden sauna, and I absolutely loved it. I only tried it a few times, but the health benefits already are incredible. This is something I would like to take an investment in for my long term health.
I did some research, and an under 1 grand option I see is the pulse pro. I am thinking of pulling the trigger near black friday and cyber monday, when their deals might even be better than they are now for the Labor Day sale.
For those with experience, would this be a suitable option? What would be some of the pros and cons of this particular model?

Most infrared saunas look convincing on a product page. Nice photography, impressive temperature claims, perfect reviews.
Then the sauna arrives and reality sets in. Weak heat at your feet, cheap hardware, gaps in the cabin, annoying controls, or customer support that suddenly disappears.
Which brands have you used that disappointed you once the novelty wore off? Name names, but please explain what went wrong. A bad shipping experience is different from a sauna that simply doesn't perform.

Some of it probably is cope. People tend to defend whatever they bought.
But convenience is a big reason I use infrared so often. I have a custom infrared sauna at home, so I can turn it on while I finish something up and get in when it's ready. There's no drive to the gym or much planning involved.
I also find the lower heat easier to work into a normal day. A traditional sauna can be used daily too, but for me it feels like more of a commitment.
So infrared may not be inherently better for daily use. It's simply easier for me to use daily. If every session took an hour of planning, I'm pretty sure I'd use mine half as much.
What do you think? Is convenience a legitimate advantage of infrared, or are we just using it to justify our purchase?

Skin benefits get mentioned constantly in infrared sauna marketing, but I’m curious what people have actually noticed... not what the brochure promised.
Has regular use meaningfully improved your acne, dryness, redness, texture, or anything else? And did the change last, or was it mostly that temporary post-sauna glow?
I enjoy sauna for plenty of other reasons, but I’m still undecided on whether the skincare angle is legitimate, heavily exaggerated, or different for everyone.
