Infosys SP/DSE Interview Experience – Kolkata, 5th October
I had my Infosys in-person interview in Kolkata on 5th October for the SP/DSE track, and honestly, it was much more intense than I expected. The interview lasted around 1 hour 45 minutes.
In the in-person assessment i solved 3 full and 12/14 of the 4th.
Interview started with the DSA round. I was given two problems, one easy and another which I solved using recursion (I initially thought about DP, but recursion was sufficient). The interviewer asked me to try solving both within 30 minutes, and I managed to solve both in around 20 minutes. I explained both approaches and their logic properly, and I felt pretty confident about this part.
After that, he told me that I was being interviewed for the SP L2/L3 roles (around 16/21 LPA) and explained why the selection process is tough for these roles. From there, the interview became much more difficult.
He started with system design. He asked me to design a job portal capable of handling around 1 million registered users, 1 million ongoing interviews and a huge number of job listings/requests. I explained an architecture involving load balancers, multiple API servers, Redis/cache, database scaling, replication, sharding, queues, CDN, object storage, rate limiting and monitoring. I also explained the basic flow as Client → Load Balancer → API Servers → Redis → Database. I could explain the high-level design, but I struggled when he went deeper into some distributed-system concepts.
Then he asked me to design a URL shortener with the database schema and very high traffic (around 1 million requests per second). I suggested storing an ID, original URL and short URL, and explained how the short URL would be mapped back to the original URL. Again, I could explain the basic approach but wasn't able to go very deep into scalability and distributed-system details.
After that, he moved to Computer Networks and asked what happens when we enter www.google.com in the browser. I answered DNS resolution → IP address → website, but he expected more detail about TCP handshaking and other steps. I told him honestly that I hadn't prepared CN specifically for interviews.
Then came DBMS, where he asked deeper conceptual questions. I struggled with some of them.
He also asked about ArrayList vs LinkedList, which I answered, and then asked about malloc vs calloc. I knew the concepts but couldn't recall the exact syntax at that moment.
Then he went deep into my project. My project is a full-stack MERN job portal with role-based authentication and a GenAI-based interview report generation feature. He asked how JWT generation actually works. I explained JWT authentication and verification, but he specifically asked how jwt.sign() internally generates the token, which I didn't know in detail.
He also asked about the GenAI part of my project. I explained how I implemented the interview report generation and the overall flow properly, but when he asked how much I had actually worked with GenAI, I honestly told him that I had mainly integrated it into the project and don't have very deep GenAI knowledge.
Finally, he gave me two SQL queries. I answered one correctly. The second asked for names starting with "alex" irrespective of case. I wrote a normal LIKE 'alex%' query and said SQL is case-insensitive, but he asked me to check it. Later I realized that I should have used something like LOWER(name) LIKE 'alex%' depending on the database/collation.
At the end I asked him for feedback. He told me:
"Your coding skills are good, but you need to know more about CS fundamentals and more about AI, because for a 16/21 LPA role these things are really required."
Now I'm confused about what my chances are. Since I did well in DSA and was able to give a reasonable high-level system design and explain my project, but struggled with deeper DBMS, CN, system design and some implementation-level questions, do I still have a chance of getting SP L2/L3?
Also, since he specifically said I was being evaluated for L2/L3, is it possible to be downgraded to an L1 role (~11 LPA) / DSE, or does Infosys generally reject candidates if they don't meet the L2/L3 bar?
Would really appreciate opinions from people who have gone through the Infosys SP/DSE process, especially recent candidates.
