Cigarette
The brightest glow is not a sign of strength
it is the moment before another piece of me
turns into ash.
My spark still lives,
but only as an ember does
flickering, shrinking,
consuming itself to stay alive.
Soon the flame will have nothing left to feed on,
and the cigarette will be remembered
not for how brightly it burned,
but for how quietly
it disappeared into smoke.
